Doing some reading on both here and a few manuals and I have gotten some conflicting information. Since my truck did not have a manual in it I will ask the experts on here for some clarification.
My truck is an 81 4x4 LUV 4 speed

The Chilton manual I have says that the transmission takes 80-90 gear old since it is an 1980+ year model. However on this site i have read that it takes 5w30 motor oil. Who is right. I don't want to screw up a nearly 30 year old transmission that works perfect now.

Also read in the Chilton that the truck should run on 91 octane fuel. IS that right. It seems to run fine on 87.

As I remember all these guys called for engine oil in the transmission. At the time 30W was recomended but I'm sure 10-30 or 10-40 would also be fine. Compression is only 8.5 so 87 octane should be good also.

I checked my 77 shop manual. It gives motor oil and says nothing about type of drive.

In an older vehicle I would use 10-30 or 10-40. The lighter oil in the oil pump causes cavitation. Besides with you being in NC it doesn't get as cold as it does some places.

This is a perfect example of why Chilton manuals are worthless.

There's no oil pump in a transmission.

Use motor oil in the tranny/t-case, they are a common unit that fills hrough the same hole. Personally I use 10w-40 full synthetic.
When the Chilton info was compiled fuel octanes were calculated differently than they are now. The engine was designed to run on regular grade unleaded gasoline. As long as it doesn't knock it's fine.

I have an 81 two wheel drive LUV and I run straight 30w conventional oil in my transmission. That's one of the recommendations the shop manual list for it.

I run 87 octane gas in mine and it runs just fine...still gets 27+ MPG.
