alrighty...
the luv has a couple lil dents and such and its fair share of scratches...
its about time for a new paint job. since im getting some surface rust in the scratches...
what im wondering is (about) how many quarts of paint does it take to paint a luv??
not including primer and clear, just the paint.

i plan on going two tone at the body fold line (no idea what else to call it) so it shouldnt take a whole lot of either color, also going to do the door jams, interior cab and maybe engine bay while im at it. the truck is so tiny i cant imagine it taking much paint.

it is getting soo freaking expensive for auto paint these days!!! i am still debating between going with some paintforcars.com paint ($50ish a gallon...) or going all out with some from houseofkolor.com ($50+ a quart) huge price difference... but the HoK paint just looks so dang good... small budget says paintforcars.com since i can pretty much paint the whole truck for about $100 from them and they do have some good colors. maybe add some flake to theirs.

interior of the bed will get some roll on liner so it wont need paint..
.
i am thinking it sholdnt take over about a gallon and a half to do the entire thing but i also havent used a hvlp paint gun on a truck before. i have been told using the hvlp setup will conserve a bit of paint and make it a more efficent to paint it all. i already have the paint sprayer, compressor etc. just need paint and primer.

any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!!!

Should take right about a gallon to do 3 coats to do the whole truck of one color. That is what I have used when I painted my blazer (laquer in 1992) and more recently my dads Ranchero (base coat clear coat in 2007). Both about the size of the LUV. Had just a little left over when I got done with both and I did door jambs and engine compartments on both, nothing looks worse than a nice paint job then they open the door or hood and it is a different color.

With Paint about a Pint per panel is what works fo rme. When it comes to paint....my old Auto Body instructor always said, " I'd rather have a gallon left over than to be one paint cup short". I've never needed more than a gallon except for painting a couple full sized vans...with the extra size of the roof I always added another quart. A gallon will do you fine for your Luv.

Now for Paint. My son and I just finished his LUV last summer, color change with gutted interior and all, (pics are out here) and it came out pretty good. It was his project to fund and since he works at Fleet Supply he wanted to use Van Syckle Paint. It shot well and looks nice but the shine is definitely better with an Acrylic Enamel or Laquer and CLear coat paint job. I haven't tried any of the new water based paints yet and probably won't until I absolutley have to. With Paint, get the best that you can comfortably afford and go with it. My paint gun is an old Binks Model 7 siphon feed so I'm sure if you're going with the setup you mentioned you will have no problems with running out.

BTW, nice rides Tilted!

so acrylic enamel does turn out good? i have the option of acrylic enamel or acrylic laquer... the laquer costs quite a bit more so if i an make enamel look good with some clear i will be happy :ebiggrin
and i agree completely tilted that is the crappiest look. if your gonna do a paint job its a PAINT JOB. not a bunch of paint sprayed on a truck. i want it to look great in the sun and still look good on cloudy days ya know? :eugeek
going to do the outter body, door jams, engine compartment & interior

But before i paint it i gotta finish the body work. got a dent in the front of the hood and one in the lower corner of the bed from a bent bumper. im replacing the big @$$ mirrors that are on it, and am going to put the smaller more sleek looking mirrors from a car on it and paint to match 8)
gotta get new seats also... mine are trashed. thinking about adapting the bench seat i pulled out of a volkswagon pickup for putting in the bed in the summer. would be nice to have the extra seating spot.

may i ask what color was used for that ford? it looks kinda like the paint i was looking at from paintforcars.com http://www.paintforcars.com/aep_sapphirebluemet.html

... i would like to buy about a half gallon of each color and a half gallon of clear and do a clean two tone job with some flake in the clear to make it stand out in the sun.
i am thinking i would like to go a dark blue (like that metallic saphire) on the lower half, and a deep dark purple on the upper half. :D
but im still deciding on colors. i just think those two would go together well 8)

dang i am getting paid a lot more than i expected this week (i work at Mcdonalds... so my checks have never been over $200 due to horrible hours... until now :) 425 on friday and then the next will be over $550... cant wait to have $$$ to spend on the luv!! will shorten the build time by a lot. should have some progress to show soon! hoping to get a some work done on it this weekend.
