I dropped in a new air filter yesterday afternoon and suddenly the truck has a strange drone to it. The noise seems to be coming form the carb side of the engine bay but performance hasn't suffered one bit. Any idea what this could be?

Check the last thing you did before the noise and see if something is out of place. One other member on this board found a piece of his air cleaner or something had come loose and lodged in his carb and cause his truck to run poor. Was real lucky it did not cause more problems. Good luck

Yeah, I've removed and reinstalled the filter a couple of times and the carb looks clear from obstruction. I went out to the dumpster to try and grab my old filter but it looks like they came and emptied it already. It's a strange, sort of "ricey" drone, for lack of a better word, kind of sounds like a civic with a crappy exhaust system. It seems quieter when I remove the lid from the air cleaner housing, like the sound is echoing inside. It doesn't seem to effect the driveability, it still runs fine and starts up immediately, it's just kind of annoying and worrisome. The idle seems a little high as well, could a clean filter require a carb adjusmtent since there is likely more air reaching the engine? Would a lean condition make strange noises?

Thanks for your help, this is my first carbed car so I'm still familiarizing myself with their workings.

Also, what is the stock spark plug gap? I need to do a tune-up anyway and perhaps that will remedy these symptoms.

when I put a new filter in my first chevy luv back in highschool it made a drone to it as well but the old filter looked like it had been in there since the day it left the factory... super dirty.

I think I may have just been psyching myself out. I tightened down the air cleaner cover and the drone mellowed out a bit. I've had bad luck with couple of vehicles in the past so I think I'm just anticipating catastrophic failure around every corner. Considering it's performing better than ever, I think the only thing to do is keep an eye on it. Thanks for the help. :)
