My windshield wipers act like they're trying to clean off molasses in the dead of winter. Are LUV wipers supposed to fast or are they normally slow? This is my first LUV. If I have a problem, any tips would be appreciated.

They should move a pretty fair speed. What you may need to do is check the greased areas (pivot points and at the motor) to see if it is hard. Mine worked only on high speed before I removed the entire assembly from my LUV as I am in the process of rebuilding it, and I noticed the grease was really hard. After cleaning everything up and greasing the parts, everything moved so much easier and they work (without wipers as they are sitting on my bench) in low speed now. You might even be able to use a heat gun to melt the grease out to see if they speed up. If they do, then you know what the problem is and fresh grease will be in order. Anyone else?????

1980 Stepside LUV (Again)

I'm always looking for upgrades I can do to my LUV, and I must say that the wiper thing has plagued me for a while. Even though my wiper motor is fairly new and all the joints are good, the wipers are much slower than I would like for them to be. I was thinking about the possibility of rigging a better wiper motor to the LUV. I know theres a lot involved but it might not be such a bad thing. Safer, and possibly easier to find a replacement for down the road.

WOW, I don't got any on my LUV, I think the first owner ripped m outta there....what a stupid mistake. What could i find for a replacment set, like motor and the whole system? There ain't no wrecked LUVs from where i come from so thats outta the question.....S10 maybe??

SmokinLUV- If you ask me, thats the perfect opportunity to "upgrade" the LUV wiper system like I was talking about. I think if you can find an Isuzu Pup or a really early Trooper you may have a better chance than you would with an S-10 if you just want the easiest replacement, something that goes without many mods. On the other hand, if you do go with a system out of an S-10, it'll probably require a few mods but in the end I can guarentee that you'll have much better wipers than the rest of us.

I have not really had much trouble with wiper speed on any of the LUVs I've owned. I have more trouble getting them to track right and keep from skipping off the glass when I'm doing 70 in the pouring Oregon sunshine. I have been driving a LUV since high school though, so maybe I'm just used to the speed thing. Personally I don't like my wipers flapping back and forth 3-4 times a second, so I don't even run mine on high speed.

I posted a tip a while back that might be some help though, Fixing Leaky Wiper Shafts. It covers greasing and resealing the part of the shaft that the the arm hooks to. A little rust there can go a long way to slowing things down, not to mention the massive amount of water the leak can collect on your floorboard.

You might have something of an electrical fault going on, like a weak battery or alternator. If you've seen any other signs of this like dim lights, low speed on the heater fan, or sluggish cranking speed from the starter you might want to get the bat and alt checked out. Most auto parts stores (Shucks, Autozone, etc) and just about all battery shops will have some sort of free test they'll run on both for you.

I have to agree with 800xl check all your electrical stuff I had the problem of mine being slow as well but I was also experiencing the dim lights and a few other things and it turned out to be my voltage regulator.... when I first bought it I never realized it was an external voltage regulator so I never thought to check it out first. So you might want to maybe do a check on it too.... that is if you have one!! Well just my two pennies.
