I would like to convert my G180 1980 to the breakerless. I have email pertronix and they need to know the part number of my distributor before they can tell me for sure if they have a kit. I looked for a tag or number on my distributor and did not see one. Does anyone know the part number for an 1980 distributor or the pertronix part number for a 1980. I would appreciate it any help....thanks Ryan

1980: 0291005970, 0291005980, 0291005990, 0291006000 were the stock ones used that year. Same distributor but with different advance rates for various models such as: 4x4, 2x4, standard transmission, auto transmission. Calif or Federal emissions.

Contact a Pertronix seller by phone or in person, and ask for a
Reluctor ring 18433 and a
Module kit 16430
These will screw into the old points screw holes and work great. I love mine.

The kit is for the older eng. The 2 part numbers listed above is for the newer eng. The kit might work on the newer, but I found the 2 parts worked well for me on the newer eng.

One kit would be for 72-75 models (Hitachi distributor). A different kit would be required for 76-80 models (Nipon Denso distributor). I doubt if they would interchange.

Rondog:
How much does the setup that you have go for, and how does it compare with a later PUP pointless distributor?

I think it was $80 or $100. I have the Pup set up in my other truck and They run the same. no difference. Don't forget to put new Pup spark plugs in too.

I just got an e-mail the the Pertronix tech with the part numbers to order. Ignitor #1643 and coil #40511. I did not get a price from him as they do not sell to the public. I still don't know which set up would be the best, Pertronix or 85 Pup electronic distributor.

ok, found the thread i needed!

a few questions to add to this discussion.

the Pertronix website lists the Ignitor (TM) ( ) part number for the luv as number 1741. listed as for a luv 74 to 75.

I spoke with the Jegs guy and he says this is supposed to work with my 80 distributor. Says it will also work for a Dodge Colt 8O :?:

So which is it? (His is a 78 apparently)

I Haven't seen pics of ANY pertronix setup yet so i don't know what the differences in the kits are. SOMEONE HELP!

Once the conversion is done, what gap should i increase to, or is there a specific plug number i should use? i run NGK plugs at the moment. V-power plugs i think.

I bought plugs for an 81/82 or even newer LUV/Pup and gapped them to that vehicles spec.

some good info...

just as a thought, because im having the problem with the resistor, how bad would it be to drive the truck with no resistor on the coil? i tried to find a set from some place, but no one has/makes a resistor for the luv anymore.

i checked the advance auto parts website, but the part number they show for the resistor, is only for the actual rope-winding section of it. and it's too short to boot. ( PN sc118 by Borg warner)

so, since i have to get the suspension fixed, and still have yet to get the ignition to run right since the day i parked it, i need it to move at ALMOST any cost.

should i just check the electricity specs, or wait until i get the pertronix setup?

(I'm just about ready to tear my hair out right now...) :x

I drove mine without a resistor for a while. Twelve miles per gallon and no power points burned within two to five miles timing way off. I went to napa and asked for a ballast resistor they said they could get one the next day. I asked what they had in stock and matched the ohms as close to Luv stock as they had and havent changed points or had any problems since. Cheaper than saying it was for a Luv too. When you search use ignition resistor. My coil is still fine... The one I got was ceramic. Mounted it to the screw on the relay cover box and ran a new wire to the coil. Used a bigger screw.

do you remember the part number you used?

i ordered one from work after checking the advance auto parts website, but what i got was WAY different than what i had on the truck. they measured only 1.5 inches, and i think were for another car.

I ended up modifying the set i had with the box that held the original resistor.

what i didnt think about until after i had made the new resistor is to check the actual resistance.

Book says resistor ohms should be between 1.3 to 1.5 ohms. This is obviously WAY off.

give me a hand here, im almost thinking about getting a different truck after dealing with all this...
