First change the fuel filters. Then take a rag and place it under your idle solenoid and remove the solenoid.Be careful!there is a spring. a needle and a gasket:DO NOT LOOSE ANYTHING!
Use car cleaner to clean the needle. Then go from there checking for vacuum leak.
Good Luck!

I have changed the filiers twice, no vaccum leaks, and cleaned needle and set with carb cleaner.
If I turn the idle up on the truck I can seat or take the needle completly out and the truck stays running, Is that normal? Thanks, Ryan

My experience with LUV carbs is the best solution is to replace it, get rid of the headache. The Hitachi carb it's 30+ years old. They are a real pain and even if you get them working, it's just a matter of time before something else goes wrong on them. My blue LUV I replaced it with a Weber carb and was very happy with the results. Got great MPG and gain performance. My red LUV is acting up now. It has an a new fuel pump and filter and the rebuilt the carb from the previous owner. When it's cold it won't start unless I pour gas down the carb. Once it runs it runs fine. I'm planning on putting a Weber on it but money is real tight right now so I have to wait. Here is a vid on how bad my blue LUV ran and how much better it ran afterward. It includes the 'how to' replace and is in 2 parts. There are 2 versions one with music and one without and both have @ same views so some people like with music and some like it without. Most here like it without:

Yup, if you turn up the idle speed too high the idle mixture needle will have no affect. Make sure you have 12V to the run-on solenoid or it will not idle. It is the one pointing to the left (rear) as you face the carb from the passenger side.

Also, when you check for vacuum leaks, don't forget to check the big old hose that goes to the brake booster. That one got me a while back.

Sorry to hear that.

What color smoke? How many miles on it. Did it smoke any before?

What did you set the carb at? Idle screws out by how much? Remember to use a vacuum gauge to set the idle. If it still smokes then-

My first guess is bad fuel, water or diesel in the fuel. Put new fuel in the carb and see how it runs.

Do a compression check. My 2nd guess is maybe a blown head gasket. Was it overheated recently. What happen to it last before you experience problems with it? Check your oil for water, it will look like chocolate milk if it has water in you oil which are signs of a cracked head or blown head gasket or other major problems.

Good to hear it. Yeah I felt the same way after installing the Weber, night and day difference. My truck became fun to drive instead of a pain just to get it to start and stay running as it was before the swap.

Either one would work, I went with the larger one since I planned on doing a manifold swap and other mods and was surprised on how well it ran with the stock motor, I was very happy.

Most go with

K 662 Electric Choke 32/36 DGEV

I went with

K 662-38 Outlaw 38 E.C. 38 DGES
