Has anyone installed a cd player in dash? Minor mods or is it a complete mess?

Me, you might say a mess. It wasn't a CD, but AM/FM/cassette. No way would it fit the OEM hole. I chopped a hole in the top of the dash and welded in some braces. I haven't looked around much, but I am sure there are some smaller CD players that might not be as bad.

Well according to Crutchfield the size is 7"w X 2.1" long so I don't think it will be that bad..but I haven't gotten a tape out and measured it yet either!
Any other input would be appreciated!

I installed a dvd player head unit in mine. You could say it was sort of a mess, but if you know what your doing and have a little electrical know-how it shouldn't be that bad. There are only a few connections to make. The speakers, the power, and the antenna. I didn't have any problems with size, it was tight, but it slid in there just fine.

With mine, I cut the original connections off and hooked all the wires into one plug that matched the dvd's plug. The only tricky thing was that the dvd head unit needed more power than it was receiving, so I ran a wire directly from the fuse box under the hood, thorough the firewall, and up to the head unit. I installed a fuse right before the power reached the dvd player to protect it from any shorts to be safe.

Here's how it turned out (sry, crappy pic).

Yeah, wiring is a pain. In a modern unit you more speaker wires plus usually you need a hot with the key off wire for the memory.

Mine doesn't seem to be. Try some of the lighting circuits.

Cleaver, why don't you tell us what you're driving. I can help with the 2nd-gen, but not 1st.

With the ignition switch wire, I just spliced it in with the hot wire I ran. I didn't think it was necessary to run it to the ignition switch (although the clock on the head unit doesn't keep time because of it. I have a seperate clock/thermometer thing that I use instead). There was an extra ground wire that I tacked to the frame, and I just wrapped electrical tape around the ends of the extra speaker hookups I didn't use. I ended up not even using the orginal hot wire.

You could maybe run the ignition wire to the brake and flasher lights circut. In my truck (a 78) its always hot. Hope this helps! :ebiggrin
