Hey all, I tried to search for my answer, but couldn't seem to find it;
What is the redline on a stock G180 (1980)?
I know max horsepower is achieved at, like, 4800rpm, but what is the max safe limit?

The 3 I have sound like they want to come a part if I hit 5k. IDK what, or if a book would say.

If somebody has an owners' manual it'll tell you the max allowable speed in whatever gear and you can use online gear ratio calculators to figure out what the revs would be. Last time I did that for my 72 (old style G180 motor) it worked out to like 5500 RPM. I doubt if I'd want to take it up that high.

I've been wondering about this since I got the little truck!
Anyone know what cruising RPM is at 75mph? My truck is still a long way from being able to cover long distances...

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, I don't have an owners manual.
I do have a Haynes and a Chiltons, and neither lists max rpm.
I regularly shift at 4-4200, but rarely get as high as 5k. as I don't want to do damage.

Rondog; I don't know what to tell you, Mine sounds pretty good at 5k, Just haven't gone higher out of fear.

Ctmandu; Wow! 6-6500 seems high. Ever spin yours up that far?

here is a video of me passing a car at about 4400/4600 rpm and that was around 82mph... once i get the new motor in with the bike carbs ill have to get a good reading for the rpms

MPH Calculator
Quote:
RPM 4300
Rear Axle Gear ratio 4.10
Transmission Gear ratio 1.00
Tire diameter in inches 24

The speed in MPH is miles per hour. 75

I have no tach but I have had my truck at a steady 90mph (needle was pegged past 85) and according to the same MPH Calculator my truck has seen 5650rpm with my short tires.

Quote:
RPM 5650
Rear Axle Gear ratio 4.10
Transmission Gear ratio 1.00
Tire diameter in inches 22

The speed in MPH is miles per hour. 90

i know i'm kinda drudging up an old post but rather post in old threads than create new ones.

my semi-newly rebuilt to stock spec g180 in my 1980 4x4, with 215 75 r14's i can do about 70 at 4000 rpm, and my truck sounds like its going to explode. i don't think it has a new cam :(... and i am running all stock ignition, but no real misses at 4k...mine's random in the 2-3 when lightly stepping on the gas.

I have had mine at 6500 several times. Sounds real smooth! Well more like a SCREAM! These engines have forged rods and crankshaft. I would think the pistons and flywheel would be a major concern. I think the pistons are cast.

In a 4wd you have 4.10:1 gears in the rear. Back in high school, I used to drive my 76 2wd (4.56:1 gears) 75 down the interstate all the time. It held up just fine. After high school, it was almost 10 years before I really drove it again, I took it on the highway and thought it was going to blow up. It all about perception. It's probably fine. When I was 16, I didn't think anything about it because I was used to it. At 28, I had gotten spoiled on vehicles with overdrive.

really?... six grand redline when power stops at what... 4? heh. i took mine to 5 a couple times today winding out third and it just sounded like a banshee. mind you i have the stock exhaust manifold with the emssions plug welded shut, and an older flowmaster muffler on it that is near the rear axle... but the muffler for the most part is quiet, especially when compared to a glasspack..

Also, winding it up to a high rpm and then shifting is a lot different than holding the high rpm for a long time while on the highway.

very true. on that note, with my spedo being a few mph slower than i'm really going, at about 4k i'm doing 68(so... 73ish), keeping it steady, and it sounds like a banshee. heh, i am getting used to driving it and not cringeing when i get on the freeway.

what Rpm does everone usually shift at

A)when trying to take off fast
and
B)when just driving normally
