Well acouple years ago my dad gave my son a 1980 chevy luv that had a blown head gasket (so we thought) around this time I was taking a engine building class at Shasta College so I decided to rebuild the engine, broke down the engine and found that the block actually had a crack in it found a new block bought a rebuild kit from an engine rebuild shop in town for about 900 dollars and I rebuilt the whole thing in class. For his birthday I found a stepside bed and got it for him.

Well now he is getting close to 18 and show no intrest in the vehicle in set in a warm shop for 2 years with my dad, a mechanic friend and me sitting in the shop working on hay equipment and offering to help him and nothing.

So I was talking to my dad and hes going to move it out of the shop for we can work on equipment this season comming up So im going to put it in front of my barn and start to mess with it I guess outside for right now because I can tear it all the way down to the ground if I want.

So now heres my dilema I got this rebuilt 4 banger that I could get tons of miles out of but I don't really need a daily driver got a new truck or I can slap a sbc 350 in it and maybe even stroke it to a 383 for a nice little fun truck but since I live in the great state of california it will have to be smogable, So is it possible to put the 350 in and still make it pass smog ?

Thank you ill save that to my fav, must have missed it when I did a search or use the wrong key words and I guess the next step is to figure out what vehicle to use for the swap.

Does any one have a recommendation on what model and year to look into for the swap ?

Try a 5.3 or 4.8 V8 out of a 2000 or newer Surburban.

LKQ parts lookup

2003 Engine Chevy Truck Silverado 1500 5.3L (VIN T or VIN Z, 8th digit) 127,254 $400.00

2001 Engine Chevy Truck Silverado 1500 4.8L (VIN V, 8-294)\119K 119,000 $200.00

Thanks for the info Ill probaly have to wait till I get home to actually trying to research this further work comptuer doesnt give me alot of access. My goal is to put in the 350 but also K.I.S.S (keep it simple stupid) smog hat away its not hard to work on.

of course it doesnt have to be a 350 either I was just thinking it could be any SBC and maybe even change it up from the standard swaps. Sometimes I like to be different.

Before you do anything, talk to your local smog referee. He will be the final inspector to give it a special sticker saying this is a legal swap so a smog tester will know it's all cool. The referee will tell you exactly what eng. you can have in there and what smog stuff it will need.
