I am having an issue with locking rear brakes. I took the truck to Big-O and they quoted me 850 bucks for parts and Labor. I am waiting on another quote from a local shop.

They tell me my inner and outer axle seals are leaking.

Any suggestions from someone who has been in my spot before?

Yeah, get another quote. I completely redid my rear brakes about a year ago, lining, springs, hardware, rebuilt the wheel cylinders, and I think parts were about the same, easier to find than the ones for my 02 Cavalier, and nothing new for an old coot to figure out how it worked. Rear axles have seals, but any I ever messed with had one on each side. I have not had to do my LUV. If nobody that has reports, I will see what my shop manual says. I don't think Big O knows what they are doing and was giving a high quote to cover the unknown. It is actually a simple, cheap job.

The locking up could be old, weak springs, gummed up cylinders, or a bad hose. I think you can buy all new for $50 or less. I usually rebuild wheel cylinders in place. Saves messing with old froze up lines and bolts.

Note, LUVs use conventional inverted double flare nuts on brake lines, but they are 10 mm - 1mm thread. They look much like the 3/8''-24 thread older American stuff used. They are a little hard to find.

$850 for parts and labor! I'd buy a parts truck for a couple hundred and swap the entire rear end before doing that. For that price you have nothing to lose by trying the job yourself. Brakes aren't difficult at all, haven't had to replace axle seals in my Luv yet but I'd like to think it isn't that hard. I have replaced them in other vehicles so I can't imagine it's all that hard.

When I got that quote I just laughed.

The local tire shop is good friends of mine and I'm having see if they can get parts at cost for me.If it's too pricy, then i will go to the junkyard and see if the ONE they have there is in better shape.

There are three other LUVs in town but the owners will not let anyone lay a hand on them...
