I have a 1979 LUV 4x4 with 121,000 miles on it. I recently had the fuel pump replaced and the carb rebuilt. I live in Las vegas, and this week has been super hot, around 115 to 120 degrees on the road. So while I am driving home in the afternoon, after about 20 minutes or so, my truck sputters and dies, and then it will only turn over and not start. It has done this for 2 days consecutively at roughly the same time. After sitting for 10 to 20 minutes it starts back up, and gets me the rest of the way I need to go. Then when I drive it at night and morning, it runs like a champ. Now the car is not overheating, as the temp gauge is reading as normal as usual, and there is no steam present. So now the question: Is this consistent with vapor lock? I was thinking that down near the fuel lines it is getting hotter than usual with the weather being what it is. Does anyone else have this sort of trouble in the heat? What other heat related problems could I be having besides vapor lock?

It is vapor lock.Use fuel with no alcohol in it,that will help. Also check all the vacuum lines to the emissions system.

I figured that the electric pump and fuel return line pretty much eliminated vapor lock, but that's what it sounds like. You could try insulating the fuel lines.

The electric fuel pump is located below the tank just forward of it. But it still has to suck fuel up out of the outlet on the top. Could be vapor lock. Once fuel makes it to the pump, heat won't make any difference. I would do the regular checks for fuel and spark. Coils sometimes fail when hot. Since the tank and short line to the fuel pump are back away from the engine, I wouldn't think they would cool off enough to help vapor lock very quickly. A clogged fuel filter could make a difference in a borderline case. It is just forward of the tank on the outside of the frame.
