I got pulled over last night in my Luv for a seat belt check. My truck just has lap belts which I was wearing at the time. The officer said that I needed to get some shoulder belts put back in as he pointed to the mounting holes where they used to be. I explained that I had bought it this way but that didn't matter to him. He said he used to have a Luv so he knew it came with them. After searching and reading up about the laws here in CA I think he was mistaken. The law states that you must be wearing "a seat belt" but does not require a shoulder belt. It is illegal for a dealer to sell a vehicle without proper seat belts, but that is about it on "requirements" go.

Does anyone have any experience with this issue and the law? I guess it would be easier to just put in the right belts than get hassled all the time.

You have to have whatever the vehicle had originally. LUVs all had shoulder and lap belt set ups in them. So that is what you need to have. My dad's 56 F100 had nothing, so it doesn't have to have any. But he put lap belts in it anyway.

i'm in the process of getting my self a 5 point harness for my new seats. (well, they are gonna be soon)
i think i aircraft spruce and supply has aircraft harnesses for sale.

i'm going to get an H-Harness for the seats im getting. might be a thought if you want to go with a better restraint system. if not, you can always go to the scrap yard and pick some up from a donor car. i pulled some today from a 70s beetle.

I want to keep the bench in, I daily'd a Miata with Corbeau Forza's and harnesses for a while, and though it was fun, it was also a pain in the ass...

well, i just took out the original seat belts from my truck. you are welcome to them if you so desire. the only problem is the driver side latch is busted. (the part that bolts to the floor and comes up from the bench to meet the retractable one.)

beyond that, they are brown/tan and clean. dont need anything but your old hardware to bolt them in.

PM me if interested!

Hey Mafoose. Did you find a good 'stockish' replacement? My luv only has the lap belts in it. They are stock Isuzu with the labels indicating they meet requirements for 1975. My truck also has the holes for what would be shoulder belts but nothing is currently attached and I can't figure out how something from the shoulder would integrate with the existing lap. Rondog, how did the lap and shoulder work together?

I'm thinking there were two options available: lap or shoulder and probably state by state requirements. What do you guys think? Mine just look too original/stock to have been messed with.

Figuaras. I would love to see pictures of yours. Mine does not have any retracting unit at all. And if mafoose isn't interested, I would be and I'm willing to pay a few bucks.

I just looked at the service manual and it clearly shows the shoulder belt and how it integrates with the lap belt. Now I think I understand how the lap could be used independently of the shoulder. Is there a second buckle that comes from shoulder strap?

Anyhow, I'm still interested in your seat belts Figuarus.

I haven't found a stock replacement yet, but I might put in the old 3 points from my Z.

There's more then enough room to put a retractor near the seat bottom (which is what my Z uses).

There's an industrial supply place online that will get universal 3 point belts for cheap every once in a while, I'll try and find the link.

I picked up a nice set of blue seatbelts out of a 75 Mikado with all of the hardware included. Then while cleaning out the garage last weekend I found a box of stuff that I had taken out of my LUV when I first got it, well heck if there wasn't shoulder straps to go with the lap belts in the truck. I cleaned them up and now I have the blue set available if someone needs them.
I will put an ad in the classified section.

You don't mention what state you are in, but I know the law rather well in my neck. I think a cop is feeding you a line of B.S. in my opnion. I never wear the shoulder belt, never did in my years of driving a LUV either.

I don't want to open a can of worms for you, but if I were you I would just fight the ticket, as the law does not state what belt to wear or how it is supposed to be worn, etc. At least in the california code anyway, so I would reference the written law and apply it as written. No dig on cops, as I work with them, but most if not all are not very well informed of the law, I see this all the time here.
