I just bought my Luv a few weeks ago. When I first got it the headlights worked on dim but not on bright. Now the dims have quit also. When I pull the switch to turn on lights the other marker lights work but not headlights. I think it is the blinker/dimmer/ wiper swtch. Am I on base. Is it easy to change this part?
thanks

Pull up your wiring diagram.Look to see if there is a relay..You can also turn the switch on and see if you have power with a test light.Check that first.

Iffy headlights on mine was caused by fuse box corrosion. Cleaned it as per ctmandu's instructions and now electrical is at 95% (some emissions stuff is not working).

Thanks for the tips.
Anyone know where I can find a wiring digram? Or if there is a relay on an 81.
where do I find ctmandu's instructions for fuse box cleaning.

Dash lights and marker lights outside work when I pull switch, but no headlights.

Since you originally had the problem just with the high beams, I think the dimmer switch (actually a combination switch - wipers/washer/hazard/turn signals) is the problem. The contacts for the low and high beam headlights are like points in a distributor--but they're on springy metal tabs that, over time, bend and don't make contact. I removed my switch and re-bent them with tweezers about 20 years ago. No problems since.

If it turns out to be your headlight switch, I have two extras that I bought at salvage yards. I can part with one of them. Sorry, I don't have an extra combination switch.

Thanks for the offer Joe. I wired in a relay to run the dims for now. I used a marker light as the switch, so when I turn on the lights my dims come on. As soon as I get some free time I will remove the combination switch and check it out. I did have it out yesterday but really wasent sure what to look for. I did see the contacts but really didnt check them out to close.
(in case your wondering--- yes all three of the detent balls poped out on me. I was lucky and found them all and got them back in. I will be more careful next time.:))
any one have a spare combo switch they would part with???

 Should have warned you, but it would have been too late anyway. I've done the same thing.
