So it all started quite a while ago. I am hearing a "humming" sound that has gotten progessively worse. The faster I go the louder it would get. While under deccelaration I sometimes get a "grinding" sound. The sounds go away after I push in the clutch. I was told by a few people that it was the throw out bearing. I replaced it (it did feel bad) and test drove it and I still thave the same noise but not as often. It happens more in the 20-35 mph range. And the sounds still goes away when I push in the clutch. My next thought is that it is the pilot bearing...sadly I did not check it while I had it apart. Can anyone give me some input and steer me in the right direction?

BTW...the cluth set only has about 20k miles on it...

What type of fluid is in your transmission? Gear lube? Motor oil?

Search pilot bearing or clutch squeals.

My Toyota did the samething, only when under load, had the noise for a long time. I needed a clutch so I bought everthing I needed. The noise got really loud and then boom it broke comming home on a grade. Towed it home and repalced the clutch. The old clutch was worn out but no broken parts. Got me thinking and I looked at the back and spun the rear end- rearend was broken. Hope this helps.

i had gear oil in it for years cuz thats what i was told to put in it until recently i found out it should be motor oil so i changed it. it shifts better but thats the only difference i have noticed. and my rear end went out on me a couple months ago and replaced it with one i found in a scrap yard.

I hope it's clutch related as others have suggested. But you may have worn out a bearing from using the wrong lubricant "for years". I don't think you mentioned what it is (4-speed, 5-speed, 4wd, etc), but if it's a bearing or an internal problem, you'd be better off just replacing the transmission with a later model 5-speed.

'81-'94 will work, with the right slip yoke. The '86-'94 transmissions are stronger than the older ones.

I run Bel-Ray 85-90 motorcycle oil in my trans witch is about in between atf and 30 wt for thickness i have used this in T-5 trans and saved allot of them that were supposed to be bad and just the oil change was all that they needed and are still working. My 4X4 80 LUV has a 5spd out of a 86 Trooper and it works good on the same oil.

P'ups until '87, then Pickups until '94. Also in the 2.3 Amigos. Is your clutch cable-operated, or hydraulic?

IMO, that's asking for trouble. The factory recommended 30w originally, then later 5w30. My most trusted Isuzu expert says that a 90w is way too heavy and will shorten its life.

Oops. You replied while I was editing. I added the 2.3 Amigo as a potential donor. Is your clutch cable-operated, or hydraulic?

And @ tj: Re your comment about the T-5 transmissions--they're pretty different from the 'zu transmissions. Didn't they normally use ATF?

Well, disregard everything I said about what transmissions will fit.

That's the part that really confuses me. Except for a few California spec P'ups, ALL the 5-speeds had cable clutches, and would interchange with the 2.3 transmissions from '88-'94 Pickups (and Amigos).

You said you have a hydraulic clutch. ALL P'ups (except some rare, late CA models) have cable-operated clutches. I guess you could swap out the whole clutch pedal and cable system, but it seems like you'd be better off just getting the type with the hydraulic system. So what I'm saying is, you CANNOT use a P'up transmission at all, unless a) you're willing to convert to cable, or b) you find a late CA version. That's what I meant above when I said:

I do not know what vehicles came with a hydraulic clutch and transmissions that will bolt up. In fact, I would not have ventured into the question of compatibility if I'd known that you had a hydraulic clutch. I've wasted your time and mine (sorry  ).

What I said about lubricant, I'm sticking with that!
