first off. I used to have a temper.
This happened 4 years ago
I was pissed off, put the truck in reverse and left the driveway smoking the tires.
ever since that day.
I lift my foot off the gas to slow down, using compression.
The rear end makes alot of noise.
guys have told me it is the rear end gears are not meshing right
then some guys say it is an axel bearing.

It is so loud I can not tell where it is coming from.
it only makes the noise when using compression to slow down.
I have put 900 lbs of stuff in the bed of the truck many times without issue.
I would think if it was the gears. by this time I would think the gears would have broken off a tooth or something.

Any ideas?

I just bought a 1978 parts truck which is an auto trans and the gear ratio is different. thinking about swapping complete rear ends but the parts truck might become a driver with some work so really don't want to part it out if I don't have to

U-joint is the easiest swap to verify. If it still does it afterwards, try a few things, while using compression to slow down ease your parking brake out and see if that changes the noise. If it does I would bet on a bering. It's been doing this for four years and still doing it without change...how old is your fluid, try an additive in your gear oil, SFR, Prolong, powder graphite ( I got that idea from here) How much backlash do you have? Are you sure the noise is coming from the rear end or can it be coming from the Tranny?

Noise when coasting means pinion bearing too much end play. Try tightening the large nut at the rear end yoke a bit. There should be no end play there at all.
If not that, bearing may be bad.
