Have a '79 LUV, all stock. When I start the ol' girl from cold she runs nicely until I try to pull away, then there is a horrible spluttering gap between idle & decent revs. Here's the weird part, if I then drive for a mile, pull over (Home Depot anyone) for 5 minutes then pull off again, she runs fantastically from then on.

Once warmed up she runs great too, but if I keep driving without the "Home Depot" 5 min. stop, she'll run rough for several miles until she gets nicely warmed.

Got me scratching my head. I'm loathe to spend on a new carb since, once she's happy she runs really well.

Any thoughts?

It sounds like you're on the right track and something is gummed up in your carb. The rebuild kits were around $20 if I remember right, so that might be an avenue you would want to consider if you don't want to pony up for a new carb just yet.

Might also be a pump problem if the motor in it is getting flakey but that's going out on a limb. A filter problem would be more constant.

Let us know if anything changes for the worse.

Do you have a link to the rebuild kits?

Thanks

Is there any ice or frost on the base or throat of your carb? I dont know much about it but it could possibly be a problem with carburetor icing. I think it mostly happens when its humid, just a thought. Another thought, it may be your choke not opening soon enough. after you stop it soaks up enough heat to open. Same if its icing up after you stop it soaks up heat and thaws. Only things I can think of Id check to make sure your air diverter on the nose of the air-cleaner housing has vacuum if you pull the vacuum hose off you should hear it switch. and see if your choke is closed when it runs bad and open when it runs good. You can adjust your choke to the lean side and it will open sooner.
