Ok so I'm working on getting my luv running so that hopefully I can make the trip down to salem for the meet in june. The problem Accelerating go through first second then third or fourth depending on which one you do like if you stay in third or shift to fourth it will shake the luv then with the pedal floored it still goes only 15-20 mph. I have replaced the points, cap, rotor, plugs, and I have done a carb rebuild I really wanna have my luv running and would appreciate anyhelp

im having problems understanding your problem.

are you saying that the truck shudders under load when in third and fourth?

or are you saying that you lose engine rpm when you are in those two gears?

and i have to ask this question just because there are SOME people who dont know how to drive a manual (not saying you dont!)

you DO know how to drive a stick right?

I dont fully understand ether but I will try to make a unexperience guess... 8O . I think it still could be your carb. I had a problem with losing power all of a sudden in any gear. I would down shift, rpm would raise then drop, down shift again and so forth, till the truck died. would start right up though. but went through the filter and pump. nothing. swaped to a weber problem solved. so other then that more info would be great. :)

Did you replace spark plug wires?

On this thread I post what I did with a similar problem-

I'm lost. (The problem Accelerating go through first second then third or fourth depending on which one you do like if you stay in third or shift to fourth it will shake the luv then with the pedal floored it still goes only 15-20 mph.)

If I'm on the right track....not sure that I am, does it seem to be flooding? Any Black smoke coming out the exhaust? Backfiring? Choke sticking? Will the engine rev like normal if you hit the gas pedal with the clutch in or in neutral?

It only does it when under load. I'm learning how to drive a stick, my step dad who has been driving truck for 15 years was driving it last night test running the new carb. It doesn't seem to be flooding there isn't any smoke. No i didn't change out the wires but I will tomorrow.

The problem is when accelerating through first second then third or fourth in either third or fourth gear it starts to serge slows me down to about 15 then with the gas pedal floored it will go from 15 to 20 then serge again then back down to 15 but then if you try and go back down to first gear and try to get the rpm's and speed back it just slows you down then once you turn it back on you can go again just fine I think that it's the pump and that it is starving the carb

From what I can make of this it sounds like it is starving out from lack of fuel. As was said, replace the fuel filter. If you have the stock fuel pump replace the one inside the pump itself.

definitely sounds like fuel delivery, also check the fuel level in the site window on the carb, maybe a carb float issue.

Well when I rebuild the carb I fixed the float. It was bend to where it was never going to shut off it would just keep filling it up. Is it hard to check the timing?

There are two plugs on the bottom of the carb that go to the main jets that act as a little reservoir and will hols water or debris that the main jet will suck up under full throttle. It is easier to pull the carb and then pull the plugs and check for debris just be sure NOT to turn the carb over pull the plugs in the running position.

Not if you have a timing light. Disconnect the vacuum line to the distributor and plug it. Then start the engine and point the light at the scale above the crank pulley on the right side. There is a notch in the pulley at top dead center on #1 cylinder. A little white paint makes it easier to see.

I don't know how common timing lights are now, since the timing can't be adjusted on modern engines. I didn't even teach my kids to do points and timing.

sounds to me like what some others have mentioned, possibly a fuel delivery problem. i.e. not enough getting to carb and starving itself. Also have you tried looking for vaccume leaks?

Is it possible a measurement was off when you rebuilt the carb, and the float is now too low? The sight-glass on the carb should show gasoline half-way up. If not, then the float setting is off.

If not that, I'm betting on the fuel filter. Often there's 2 of them: one at the gas tank and one near the carb.

Good advice, but where would you find one?
