if you will look at the drum you will notice to small holes on the face of the drum outside of the lug nuts, these are threaded if you screw in a 12mm headed bolt they will force drum off of the hub

Dottie I didn't see any thing on wheel cylinder. You might check and see if it is not compressing all the way. Could be just enough to stop drum from going on.

Thanks Cyclon696, I just see the one hole where the screw that holds the drum goes in (at this point though, I am trying to get the drum on)

ellets, good thinking. I took both cylnders off and took them apart, cleaned out the rust and gunk, and refurbished them with new springs, cups, etc... from the kit. I even took the drivers side one (the one giving me trouble) apart a second time and put the whole thing together and still had the problem. It seems to be compressing OK, though the cylinder spring does have some tension to it.

OK here are some photos that may help explain a bit better

brake parts before installation:

passenger side rear wheel brake components after I put it all back together:

star wheel adjuster (I had trouble understanding what this looked like before I got the drum off, so here it is for others to see!)

passenger side with new drum on:

Now the fun begins with the drivers side, the problem is that the shoes and components shift around depending on how you press it all together. It is supposed to do this so they can adjust while you are actually braking. It seems at this point with the drum off, I can shift them to make the shoes look even except for the adjuster lever by the star wheel (see video, towards the end of video, I notice adjuster lever is a little too high, I push it down to the right position on star wheel, you hear a ping from all the other components shifting out of whack (i.e. the shoes are now uneven):

Image

driver's side rear wheel with components put together (notice that adjuster lever is in correct place now, but shoes are off kilter, a little hard to see):

Even with the shoes looking even and the adjuster lever off, the drum still won't fit on.

The driver's side adjuster lever seems to have more tension on it from the self adjusting cable than on the passenger side one.

I am going over to work on her again this afternoon. A friend of mine suggested checking the emergency brake cable to see if it is still slack. Maybe it is pulling the brakes somehow. Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks!

Is the star adjuster fully closed? Sometimes they won't fully close due to rust.

star adjuster is fully closed. It had been stuck when I first removed it, but I cleaned it out good and put antisieze in the threads before reinstallation. Thanks for the suggestions, I just got to my folks house where it is sittin and will start messing around on it again. Keep the ideas comin! Thanks!

SUCCESS!!!!! I figured out what the problem was!!!!! It turns out that I am a complete idiot! I had the emergency brake on! I don't know when I put it on, but it was on. I guess the passenger side set up allowed for the drum to go on anyway. Now I am gonna go break them in. ROCK ON!!!!

I was going to ask about the e brake. But then thought, nah, too obvious.

Like the guy with the stuck dist. Someone asked if he took the holder off. He had, but you have to ask just in case you know??

Glad you got figured out anyhow. 8)

I have a similar problem with my 80 Luv 4x4. I went to move it in the drive way, and felt like the brakes were one. I put the rear up on jack stands and could not turn either well. I know have the passager tire off, but the brake drum will not come loose.
I tried hitting a rubber mallet around the edges of it. I am wondering if the next step I should try the brake adjustment wheel and trying loosing the pads up. Any suggetions?

If the wheel won't turn, yes back off the adjuster. If it will, go back over the thread. No sense me repeating what is there. I have put a board over the studs and put pressure on with a couple of c clamps. Then hit the drum with a hammer.

Put antisieze on the hub before you put it back on. Put antisieze on everything except brake parts before putting stuff back together. Back off on the torque when you do.

I got the passanger side drum to loosen up. The manual says you want the drum to come off with just a little friction. The dirvers side is not so cooperative. Anyone know if you turn the adjusteor the same on both sides? It't on their good.
