so um...

i had this happen to my last 2wd trans, and i noticed that the 4wd trans is doing it too. every so often, the shifter pops out of fourth. i feel like it could be the boot that is in place right now, but i want to make sure this isnt a sychro problem. i looked through the FSM, but it states the possibility of the detent balls being worn, and THAT is what's causing this to occur.

any thoughts?

I have about 145K on my 2WD, mostly around town, hardly any of them without a stop. Mine is still doing fine. I would look at the shift boot. My original one died long ago. None of the aftermarket ones worked very well. I finally made one our of vinyl covered fabric. Not much of a job and loks and works good. I would try that. You may be able to do a search and find where I described making it.

Just pull the boot up out of the floor pan & drive with it sitting around the shifter for a while. If it still pops out of gear it ain't the boot.
