well i am new here and just bought my 2nd 1980 4x4 LUV. Right after i bought it i realized that it was overheating so i replaced the thermostat. after i replaced it, it was still overheating. so i thought that maybe i installed it the wrong way, so i turned it over. still overheating. so i bought a new 160 and installed it today. all seemed to be working well. the gauge read right under the mark and did not move. so i figured that was about 160 degrees. i drove 5 miles to my brothers house and it never moved. i let it idle for about ten minutes and it was still good. BUT while it idles it has a constant stream of white/grey smoke coming out of the exhaust. really not much of a smell to it. as soon as i started driving the smoke cleared u but the temp gauge took of to H. didn't quite make it all the way to H so i drove it on to town. oh, and the heater stopped heating. i am stumped and hope you guys can help me. the LUV is in awesome shape but this is really bothering me. THANKS

take out the plugs and find out what cylinder you have the most leak in.

it's going to be almost completely white.

there is a thread i started a while back titled "head gasket leak?" with many pictures and instructions on how to do the job.

Yeah, the head gasket. You may not get the smell because it doesn't have much antifreeze in it.
