hey guys,

i woke up this morning and decided to get the valves adjusted since i hadn't done it since i rebuilt the cyl head a few months back.

well, i did the procedure by the book and now i'm getting a ticking.

the intake was adjusted to .006" and exhaust was adjusted to .010"

All adjustments were done while pistons were at TDC.

should i close the gap even more? or should i take a look at the camshaft lobe height? i

it wasn't ticking before i adjusted anything.

2nd question,

i took a look at the factory service manual, but wasnt able to find an oil pressure figure in there. what should oil pressure read right now?
i just got a gauge for the truck, and i would like to know what the operating range is.

thanks guys!

Maybe it is my long ago English car owning days, but I like to be able to hear the valves. Noisy ones don't burn.

I hold 80 psi at start up.. It drops to 60 cruising on the interstate at 70. That was running Pennzoil YB 5W-30. I haven't been out on the road with it since putting in Mobil 1 5W-30.

hmmm. noisy valves dont burn, but they wear out faster if the clearance is not correct.

right now im holding 74psi at idle, but initial shows only 62 or so. @ 3k rpm, it climbs to about 80. just wondering if this is right.

ok another update.

i went back in...AGAIN and rechecked all the valves clearances

the factory service manual says .006 for intake side, and .010 for exhaust.
rotated the crank so the no's 1 and 4 cylinders were at TDC, and checked the clearance for exhaust first. both were at .010
rotated the crank 180* and the no's 2 and 3 cylinders were at TDC, measurement shows .010 for exhaust.
rotated again for no's 1 and 4, checked exhaust. adjusted the num 4 cylinder intake. was over about .010
I made sure all the gaps were at the correct specification.

And now the engine ticks like a madman. I'm guessing this is normal? i suppose since the valves were WAAAAY out of adjustment, it only makes sense that the rockers will tick now. i just dont want to wreck this engine you know?

oil pressure update.

when i started the truck this morning, the oil pressure rose to 60 someting PSI and then after it had warmed up, it dropped to about 20-24 at idle. i dont have the oil pressure warning sensor connected, but i will after i get the motor transferred into the new truck.
i guess maybe a call to Chevy might be in order...

Readjust the valves but this time look at the lobes and make sure the are pointed straight down when you adjust that valve. Your adjustment is ok but you will find that doing it with the lobe down your adjustments will be loose and this is a more accurate way to adjust. Some may argue so you be the judge.

well, that does make sense. The rocker arm would HAVE to be neutral before any adjustment is done.

i'll give that a try tomorrow morning when i get off of work

Normal oil pressure is 57 lbs while cruising 2000-3000 rpm for the Luv. Rule of thumb any engine---10 psi per thousand engine rpm minimum pressure required. 20 psi at idle is fine.

tj, i used my dad's garage, and since he was a mechanic, i had to humor him and i tried to adjust them based on firing order.

it sounded worse.

tried it your way, and it runs and sounds MUCH BETTER.

thanks for the tip!

Valve adjustment is affected by temp too. It makes a difference if you adjust them with the motor hot, warm, or cold. I believe they tighten up slightly when warm, but I could have that backwards. My Isuzu Trooper manual had specs for both hot and cold adjustments and it uses the same rocker arm setup as the LUV engine.

According to my manual, the valves on the Luv should always be adjusted with the motor cold.
