Ok so my Luv runs and drives, I go to put it in reverse and I blow a 15 amp fuse. Took the bed off of it saturday tried putting it in reverse and it was still blowing the fuse. Has anyone else had this problem? I could use any advice.

er, sounds like the wire for your back up light is grounded out. Then it blows the fuse when it tries to turn on. That or the reverse switch in the trans is no good. That's about the only thing electrical that happens when you go into reverse I think.

I agree, if you pull the boot off the shifter and look just foward of the stick you will see the terminals for the switch, on top of the tranny with two wires I think. make sure that they are in good shape or disconnect and tape them up and try the reverse again and see if that don't solve the problem.

Thank you I will check that out next time I can. I think it is just a vacum leak but the luv idles about 2500 rpms then there are times also when it is just idleing and I'm not in the cab I'm outside doing somthing and its rpms will decrese then just die. Any ideas on that?

well, obvious things first, you know?

check all the vacuum lines and make sure anything not plugged is plugged.

OK. When vacuum lines were brought up I was wondering. On a manual, it has to have a short in the backup lamp circuit.

So I looked under the shifter boot and saw the reverse I don't know if I was able to get to the reverse without taking the engine out they looked fine could it be the voltage regulator? I didn't do much with the carb painted the frame instead. I was also wondering if I need to take the steering colum out to get the dash out?

i doubt it would be the voltage regulator. what that does is regulate the voltage output to the battery so it doesnt overcharge. im pretty sure you have to take the steering colum out to be able to take the dash out. there should be a couple bolts holding it underneath the colum. then remove it from the gearbox and give it a few tugs and it should come right out.

Thank you. Do you think if I took the reverse switch out it would help?

You have a short somewhere between the switch on the transmission and the back up lights on the rear. Just follow that wire to the problem. Could the switch be the problem? Possibly but likely not.

out of sheer curiosity, does it blow the fuse right when you put it in reverse, or you can put it in reverse but when you let out the clutch it blows the fuse?

i wouldnt think that a blown reverse fuse would kill the engine, but stranger things have happened. also i dont know what else that fuse controls.
i had a subaru that you could turn the left blinker on and it would sit there and blink all day but as soon as you let out the clutch to move it would blow the fuse and kill the engine.

turns out it was a wire hanging down just out of reach of the exhaust, and when the torque{and i use the term lightly seeing as how im talking about a subaru} of the engine moved the exhaust close enough to it to ground it out.

long way of saying it but dont just check the reverse wire make sure all the wires going to the rear of the truck aree in good shape and not arcing against metal.

also if you got someone that you trust that can help you, put the rear of the truck on jack stands and preferrably in a dark area, have your friend start the truck and put it in reverse while you are looking see if you can see the spark and that will tel you for sure right where it is. be extremely careful tho as the truck can come off jack stands

So I still haven't been able to figure out why my reverse wont work. I put it into reverse today to see if we could find a spot replaced the fuse started the luv up then it wouldnt start up we were confused looked at the fuse box with the 12 volt tester and I have two fuses not getting power at all so we did a quick fix put a small wire from one fuse to another but it is still blowing the fuse

Have you disconnected the back up light wire at the trans. (or further up) and tried it out? Are there any wire looms under there , being pinched or pulled on by the shifter when it moves?

This is simple, think about it. The truck was fine, you pulled the bed and now it blows fuses when in reverse. YOU PINCHED A WIRE WHEN RE INSTALLING THE BED.

I haven't tried that yet. Do you have to take the engine out to get to it or can you loosen it and take it off.

The bed is still off we took the bed off to try and figure out why it was blowing the fuse. I think it is what rondog said with the wires being pinched with the shifter
