Hi guys. For all you outdoorsmen out here this is something that has always been preached but for any us that has ever been in the situation we never listen. One of my good friends who I've trained dogs, hunted and drank beer with for the last 4 years Drowned today. His Black Lab (Maxie) fell through the ice on an outlet of the Missouri river and she couldn't get back up on her own. He went out on his knees to try and help her and he went through as well. He was swept down under the ice and couldn't get back up. The Search and Rescue retrieved his body about 30 minutes later less than 50 yards from where he went in. Hard to believe that just three weeks ago we pulled my pigeon traps and he sat here on the same couch I am sitting on now typing this and we killed the better part of a Miller Lite 18 pack. At 58 he planned to retire in four years and hunt all of the Northwest. Even those damn Mountain Chukkars as he put it.

We love our K-9 companions but for the outdoorsmen out here please take note of any situation like this that you are faced with. I to have been in trouble with this same situation this year in fact but I only fell through to my chest. Used my Benelli as a club to break the remaining ice then had to haul ass the half mile back to the truck as my pants and long johns froze like the Tin Man from the Wizzard of Oz. We've lost a great guy who jumped head first into every youth and Outdoor Woman program the state hosted. All of us need to be careful, don't put your families through this loss.

I know, we can all GO at any time doing anything (driving, hunting, turning wrenches.....) but I have to believe a little situational awareness and a tow rope that alot of people carry for reasons like this could have resulted in a different outcome.

Damn man...sorry to hear that.

i think alot of folks, even those who do spend most of their lives outside, do not realize how quickly a situation can go from bad to life threating.

again, sorry to hear about your friend.

Oh wow, so sorry to hear this. It's true, in a panic situation, you need to slow down just enough to think it through to insure safety, and then act. But then again, it's a panic situation, and we all do crazy stuff when it happens. Hang in there my friend.

My condolences. That is truly a tragic turn of events. Goes to show how much love a human being can have for friends of the canine variety. I dont think i would have done anything different.

Thanks for the comments guys. Really appreciate it. It's been a Lonnnnnnnng day of attempting to be productive at work (which was hard to stay at) for me but I can only imagine how long it's been for the family. I haven't lost a good friend like this in forever, thankfully. The waves of the way something like this sinks in is unbelievable. His buddy that was with him and couldn't save him is literally beside himself. I know, I'm venting out here but damn this sucks. Once again, thanks for the comments guys.
