I removed a tube the comes off of my valve cover and there was a bunch of white gunk inside of the tube. I know that's not normal, but what does it mean?

if its creamy, and smells kind of sweet, it means you may have coolant in your oil.

could be that you have a bad head gasket, or warped head. what year where are you located?

truck is a 1974 and im currently in NC. Head gasket would make since. Do head gasket sets typically come with all the required items for changing it out (minus tools of course)? and or is there anything else should I do while changing the head gasket? Thanks.

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/searc ... vi=1054280 is the head gasket set I am looking at getting.

that should work.

this thread will give you some basic insight into doing the head rebuild.

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=20873
its an 80, but it will be similar

also, i recommend you get yourself a factory service manual.

they come up on ebay from time to time, so do a search for your specific year.

beyond that, if you can take pictures when you do some of the work, and post them here, we can help you through it.

Find a reputable machine shop and be nice to them!

welcome to the site!

The key word here is MAY. The gunk here can also just be moisture from the engine just not getting warmed up good, like many short trips etc. Don't get in a hurry about tearing it down until you establish this possibility first. If the oil is overfull and grayish in color and your radiator is using extra water then yes, looks like head gasket.
This series engine is not noted for many head gasket problems unlike the 76-80 models.

Is '76 when they went to the cross flow intake/exhaust set up? Just curious as to what design change may have caused the head problems.

I actually bought the service manual before I bought the truck haha so I am good there. Besides the evidence of the gunk, there has been some oil loss and drops of oil around the base of the engine. I appreciate all of the help. Thanks.
