so my truck is a '78 which had some problems and i didn't have time to fix them so i bought another luv. i finally got around to swapping the engine and trans from the one i bought, into my '78. (the one i bought was a 72 with 79 engine. all sorts of nightmares there.) So i have a 78 with a 79 engine. gas cap was on while it sat so all that is in it should be water. i did clean the tank before it sat. i put in 5 gallons of gas and drove it home from where i was working and all that happened was it died a couple times. i put in heet and 5 more gallons the next day and let it idle a bit. day after, i put in new plugs.

I had another post started (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=21813) but since I changed spark plugs things aren't the same anymore, so i'm starting a new one.
I changed the spark plugs, gapped to .035
The truck will start, run, idle fine. it backfires like crazy if i give it too much gas at a time, if i give it a little gas at a time it'll be ok. (this is just sitting.)

when driving, if you can call it that, it has no power whatsoever. 1st gear is a nightmare because i can barely get it moving without it dying on me. i have to have the rpms really high to keep it from dying or backfiring in 2nd, and i cant make it to 3rd....

if the stupid people at webercarbsdirect.com would answer my emails then i would have a weber on this truck and i could eliminate a whole slew of problems.

Im really bothered about the firing order. my distributer shows 1-3-4-2 in a clockwise fashion but my dad's '79, which i originally based my order on had it going 1-2-4-3 or something else that is not 1-3-4-2. If someone could explain in detail how to make sure that's right, it would be much appreciated. his truck runs great the way it is.

thanks in advance for any help. i really want my truck back.... my jettas timing belt broke and i can fix that, but i'd rather have my luv....

Wow, guys, disregard everything.
my distributor cap (from knechts) must be a generic model because it has an arrow pointing clockwise for plug wires.... after studying my dad's truck I noticed that his plugs were simply wired backwards from the way my cap said to (except #1). Then I remembered that I'd read somewhere on here that firing order is COUNTER-clockwise. So I reversed my plug wires and everything works perfectly!

Yay for simple solutions to self-caused problems.
