I am going to make a black eyed pea soup in the slow cooker, my own recipe. 2 lbs dry peas. 3 carrots, 8 potoatoes, 1 onion, 20 cups of beef broth, 1 lb smoked sausage, 1 pound of smoked ham, my own special blend of seasonings and 3 bay leaves. Cube it all and let it simmer on slow until the beans are tender, hope it turns out as good as I plan on it to be. Serving it over rice with cornbread on the side...

Spiral sliced ham, black-eyed peas, turnip greens and corn bread. Washed down with sweet tea and cheese cake for dessert. :D

It looks like Larphead is set!!

I'm having "Hoppin Jon".....Rice, bacon, sausage, green beans and black eyed peas. Cook the Bacon, sausage and chop it up. When the rice is about half done add the Bacon, sausage, drained green beans and black eyed peas. Finish cooking. My grandmother cooked this and her idea was this allrepresented the coming of hopefully a Healthy and prosperous NEW YEAR. None of this is considered healthy now but the Green Beans were to represent Wealth. Yes she was a very superstitious woman and we had it every New Year. The difference between her and I is she would only make it once a year. I love it and make it several times a year. Probably why I have high Blood Pressure.

Wow "Hoppin Jon" is a southern thing from right after the Civil War.

I was looking up good luck foods and found this.

In the Southern United States, it's traditional to eat black-eyed peas or cowpeas in a dish called hoppin' john. There are even those who believe in eating one pea for every day in the new year. This all traces back to the legend that during the Civil War, the town of Vicksburg, Virginia, ran out of food while under attack. The residents fortunately discovered black-eyed peas and the legume was thereafter considered lucky

Yep, it's definitely a Southern dish. Most people out here in MT have never heard of it. It's a good meal made in one pot and eaten out of a bowl.....= no messy kitchen.

Just a guess, was there a major "blow out" from the dish?
