ok. i Believe my truck is having a timing problem because after i drive it,then shut it off the engine is still puttering when the key is out of the ignition. Im only 17 but my guess is probably my timing is advanced and may need to be retarded. please if anyone else knows of any other theory do let me in on the secret :smt023

Thanks

It can be a heat issue as well. Do you have real gauges on the truck? If the engine isn't too hot you are probably right on the timing. Have you checked it?

When it does that, try letting out the clutch. If it tries to go backward in first, it's called dieseling, and I'm not sure what you could do about it. As far as I know, it's not detrimental, but I'm no expert. Prolly something to do with a thing called a run-on solenoid.

Mine does it also sometimes. Sometimes it's the idle set too high. I found letting it idle for about 30 seconds when I stop and then shut it off seems to help. But I just shut it off with my foot on the brake, while letting the clutch out a bit in gear. Brings it a stop everytime. And yes, mine seems to run backwards, and is harder to restart after it diesels.

My truck did this too. It was after I had the carb off to clean it and replace the accelerator pump. When I put the carb back on it started the dieseling problem. The wire connecting the anti-dieseling solenoid wasnt hooked up. If it doesnt seem to want to crank when its hot timing could be too advanced. Turn your distributor counter clockwise to retard clockwise to advance. A little goes a long way. Good Luck. By the way my truck is a stock 1980 4x4.

Mine used to diesel before I got the carb adjusted right. You should make sure that your idle mixture is correct (try and set it with a vacuum gauge) and then set the idle screw. A possible scenario is that you're making too much power at idle, i.e. your idle screw opens the throttle blades too much, so your mixture has to be rich, and you get run on. It seemed to be the problem I had, might be worth checking.

Six degrees btdc, if you loosen the hold down nut for the distributor and move it just a hair counter-clockwise it will probably slow the idle. The way I was taught was the vacuum advance advances timing so turn the distributor towards the vacuum line to advance the timing and vice/versa. Time it hot set your carb hot. Stock timing on a 1980 is six degrees btdc mine is probably closer to 10 but Im at about 3500 feet above sea level. For me setting the timing and tuning in the carb just took time and a lot of good flat country roads. Then you can test the hills.

I cant do a picture right now but the whole distributor moves, the nut just keeps it from moving. I did mine a bunch of times with the truck running. Just put a 12mm wrench on the nut to loosen it keep the wrench on all the time turn the distributor clockwise or counter-clocwise with your other hand. The idea is to not get spark knock ie pre-ignition from to much advance, but to get close with cheap gas then by good gas. Error on the side of caution. Grab the dist cap itll turn Make a mark with a piece of chalk or something show where you started from just in case if you dont have a timing light. Iwish i had apicture. Sorry Hope this helps.

and this is what fixes---> that when i turn my ignition off that the engine still tries running (dieseling?)
