i went down to the place where i keep my truck to prep myself for pulling the motor. removing lines, wires, hoses, accessories, whatever i could do.

im wondering if there is an easier way to get the nut off circled in the picture. i sprayed some liquid wrench several times and let it sit. im selling the motor otherwise i would have just hacked that metal line.

any suggestions ...

its on the firewall side of the exhaust manifold in case you couldnt make it out.

thanks

Kyle

i used what i think was a 22 or 24 mm wrench to get it off. you could try a pipe wrench if you dont plan on re installing it.

yeah all i had on me was an 8" and 10" adjustable wrench. i tried once or twice ... didnt work too well. kept slipping. ill have to run to my parents house to grab my much larger wrenches.

oh the joys on living in an apartment and having a basic toolbox in the back of your car.

ive got a nice little craftsman hand box thats in the car. my other boxes wont fit in my apartment. i have 2 boxes and toppers for both. my mom has pretty much cluttered my craftsman setup with crap. i have triple of most hand tools so i just tossed em all in a box and threw it in the car. ill randomly pick up items such as these larger wrenches as time goes on.

funny thing is today all i used was 8mm, 10mm .. a few 12mm and others from 13mm-17mm. and a screw driver.

so basically a metric socket set and a screwdriver and you can do anything on this truck, lol

Work it over good with a hammer. Then try the proper size box wrench or a flare nut wrench if you have one.

I think that's the tube attaching to your EGR valve. If you have a torch, even a propane torch you can heat it up nice and hot and then dump cold water on it. I have done that many times on bolts and nuts like that and it usually helps. Definitely use the right size wrench, if you can find a line wrench that size that will help as well.

I had a tool box in the closet years ago when I lived in an apartment as well. It was a pain in the butt to haul up and down the stairs but at least I had tools.

You need what is called a crow foot wrench. They make them as a wrench or a thing that will work off of your ratchet

It is sometimes called a line wench

Both have their uses.

i've purchased a few from sears a couple of years ago. they can be a little bit expensive, but if you use them at least 3 or 4 times, they are definitely worth it. i hate working on something only to find out i dont have a specific size tool or special tool. i can check for you what size that nut is and let you know what size you need.

that would be great. im literally so broke i cant pay attention. so i may have to borrow the tool from someone. unless i can make a traditional style wrench work on it

It is a 24 mm. With some more Liquid Wrench, hammering and maybe heating, there is a good chance an open end will get it. I have had good luck using 15/16'' wrenches on 24mm stuff such as the transmission and differential plugs.

Note, line or flare wrenches are sort of a cross between open end or box wrenches. The things with the square hole are crow's foot wrenches.

ok, i went out and from what i can tell, its a 22mm. using a crows foot might be a little awkward, but i used a regular wrench and i got it off just fine.

That EGR fitting is a bugger. The last one I did I had a running motor so I ran it to get it good and hot, then used ice on just the fitting. Then a flare nut/line wrench and it broke loose pretty easy. I have also taken the other end loose from the intake and gotten a closed end wrench on it by going over the other end and the around the line.

I like PB Blaster. Heating it is your friend too.

I had to use a small Monkey wrench to take mine off. It buggered the hex up but I used the same wrench to put it back on. Not like you will be removing it that much!

If you are pulling the engine just leave the whole thing attached, remove the small bolt behind the engine on the bellhousing and lift the whole thing as a unit.
