oh did ya? i think i remember ron saying something like that. Worry not, it's going to a good home.

When you ask what parts i have left, are you asking for the 4wd or the 2wd?

Didn't the '80 4X4 come with a bit of a heavier clutch? I'm not sure if it was the diameter or the thickness, but either way I'm assuming that the splines on the transmission are the same. Actually, I'm pretty darn sure of it.

the 4x4 had a heavier clutch (larger diameter) for both years, the larger clutch carried over to the 2wd in 80 if I remember right. As for what parts I am looking for, I could use some small pieces mostly. No major stuff.

well, my wife is eating into my travel and truck purchase budget, and im trying to find out what costs i can cut at the moment.

im thinking about leaving my 35 amp alternator in the truck until i can get it up here, also would anyone object to me re using the clutch in my truck when mating it to the new truck? i know its best that i change it out while the engine is out, but i may not have enough for it. i have 4 weeks to come up with 500 bucks. any ideas are appreciated.

If you have to use it, you have to use it. Take it to the parts store, lay it side by side to a replacement one and use a set of micrometers to measure the wear. There are definitely worse things you can re-use.

im also wondering about the engine oil. im running 5w-20 right now, but according to the haynes manual, it says that this grade of oil is not recommended for continued high speed driving. what grade should i switch to? i plan to change the oil and pan before i make the trip to cali

i also thought about something else. when changing the oil pan, will i have to also find a longer pickup tube for the oil pump? or will the stock tube work with the new pan? man i wish i had some pictures for reference.... :?

The pick up tube is the same for both RWD and FWD trucks.
If your eng. has many miles on it, I like 20-50 oil. Small, high revving, 4 cylinder motors, you know , the Castrol commercial. :ebiggrin

k, so everything is going smoothly in preparation for the trip. and i will make sure to document everything with some good pictures. :eugeek

in preparing for the trip, i was reading the haynes manual that bought and found that the gearbox SHOULD be using MOTOR OIL??? :? is this right?

it also stated that the engine should be using 10w-30. this makes sense, but i was under the impression that i should be running 5w-20 since its thinner for winter applications. the book however says it should not be used for continuous high speed driving....

according to the lady i bought the truck from, the truck has 67000 since new. when i craked the engine open, it didnt seem like it had much wear. ive seen some REALLY worn engines before, but my cylinders still looked good. and when i checked compression, it was sitting at 125-130 pretty much across the 4 cylinders.

in short, what do you guys recommend? i dont want to screw up my engine and get stranded somewhere... 8O

Motor oil, not 90 wt gear oil for the trans. is correct. We all think it's odd, but that is what it calls for. I don't think oil wt matters all that much, really. for you road trip, in mostly cold weather, I would just use 10-30 or 40.. It was summer time, 20-50. 5-20 is probably good for your short trips at home in the winter, but I bet 10-30 or 10-40 year round, for all driving, would be a simpler way to go, and work just fine.

I run 30w in my luv transmission and 5w-30 in my engine year round. Back years ago I ran straight 30w in everything. I'm not sure it matters all that much as long as it's lite enough to start when the engine is cold (then factor in cold weather) and heavy enough to maintain viscosity at operating temps. By the way, the manual for my '05 recommends 0w-30 but says 5w-30 is acceptable. I've never ran 0w in anything.

I'm going to be the negative one here, however I've done this type of thing, numerous times and it always is, becomes a momentos task.
Have you ever done or helped someone do this on a LUV truck?
This would not be done in two days in a shop with well experienced people. You will run into some problems due to the age of the vehicles.
The cab has a vin plate and the frame also has the numbers stamped into it. I know in ca to not have proplems you would need to show both pinks to the DMV and they would register it that way. You might want to check your local DMV for thier rules, so as to be prepared. Yes the odds of it ever being checked are extremely thin, if it is checked they will impound the truck and you may go to jail, hire a lawyer and will then have to produce the documentation.
Suggestions;
*Rent the tow dolly and tow it with your LUV truck back.
*Get a friend to use thier truck or trailer.
*Bring the wife and kids, get them a week pass to Disneyland.
*Maybe some here is heading that way and can tow or trailer it up for a reasonalbe price. Possibly meet you part way.
*Advantage would be having both trucks there and then you won't be rushed. Also when rushed the potential for making a mistake would be greater and you don't want to find out about it out in the middle of nowhere.

You might look a comming accros 80 down 395 to 14 then the 210 to the 605 into lynwood.

What ever you decide Good Luck.

For everyone, never switch plates on a vehicle. If it gets checked and they don't match, the vehicle will be impounded and you will go to jail for GTA. Yes I know someone that this happened to and it cost him a lot of money for a lawyer.

i do have some experience doing this to an older 64 Chevy C10 pickup, and yes i know that this particular truck is not as cluttered with wires and other things like our LUVs, but i have decided against swapping the cabs for that particular reason. what i will do eventually, is to apply for a new vin as a rebuilt vehicle. (i can do that in utah 8) )

What im going to do is to tear the new truck's cab apart, and bring in my interior. also the engine, steering gearbox and fuel tank will be installed into the 4wd chassis. i guess if i have to pay for registration again, i will wait until the tags expire in august. THEN register it with the new title and VIN.

And i tried to rent a dolly, but my truck cannot pull the 4by AND the dolly. its too much for my little truck. i would gladly borrow my mother's truck, but she wrecked it, and i dont have the kind of friends that will go with me to places to pick up vehicles. Rondog was willing to tow it up here, but it would cost too much to do so.

PS, why would i consider that route? thats WAAAAYYYY out of the way for me to drive. i can make the trip in 700 miles or less the way i have it plotted out. Why that way?

If you don't swap the cabs then vin won't be a problem.

I'm not sure, however check with some of the 4WD guys as I believe the fuel tanks are different between 2 and 4 WD and year models.

I was thinking that that routing would give you more towns, so if you have any problems you won't have as far to walk. Been there done that. I don't know where in Utah you are, however doesn't 80 go thru Salt lake City? Altho weather might be a problem no matter how you go. I go that way to Idaho and carson city.

Bummer about your mothers truck. Yea not too many friends are into "road trips" now days.

If your cab is better or no rust, you might see if you can haul it in the bed.

well, considering the other thread on my wifes metro, im not sure what is going to happen just yet. but im hoping i can get this resolved without putting in too much of my truck money right now. i REALLY want that truck! anything local to me is either too high priced or sold or rusted out.

either way, ill keep you all posted.

guys, this whole endeavor is becoming increasingly difficult.

My buddy's work schedule is changing, and he wont be able to go with me. That means im out of a truck again.

So, i might have to push, AGAIN, or i might just go with the original plan and drive myself down there.

any ideas are appreciated.

PS, Uhaul sucks rotten donkey eggs. 600 + for just the truck.
