Hey my air compressor died, does anyone here have a suggestion for a replacement? General garage use, could be a 220 v model I'm just tired of buying crap and paying a lot of money for it.

I have a Craftsman. Has been a pretty good unit. I have heard that the air compressors with a cast head are better than ones with an aluminum head.

Craftsman is definitely the way to go. I've got two different ones, and they haven't quit on me yet. Even if they do, they've got a lifetime warranty on 'em, if I'm not mistaken.

Only a one year warranty on the compressor ( I just checked my owners manual).

Are you guys buying Craftsman or Craftsman Professional? On the compressors? It seems to me lately that Craftsman has really dropped in quality (their hand tools anyway especially ratchets), and you have to buy the Professional to get the quality that Craftsman used to be.

I think you can get a good one in most brands just stay AWAY from the oiless ones. I have an old one I think is actually named Speedaire that I got from a garage sale years ago. Still runs fine. My big one is about 5 years old from Home Depot, 60 gallon 220 volt. No issues yet...nock on wood (me tapping on my forehead)

My Craftsman is oiless and its quite compared to my old one that I had to oil. Book says only 78dbs. Its the regular Craftsman and after a year, no problems yet.

I guess the oiless was my bad luck...had a Campbell/Hausfield and it wasn't worth scrap metal but it was probably just a lemon

mine was also rated at 80 db but i dont believe it. funny thing is the 1st time i started it up the motor blew on it. bad thing is.. my sister bought it with a 4 year extended warranty and she bought it in cincy. it blew while i lived in colorado and they refused to fix it. I had to send the damn thing through the mail to my sis in cincy so she could take it in :(
Good thing is i havent had a problem with it since but..... with it being so loud ive only used it 4 or 5 times in 5 years...

When I was in college, my automotive instructor warned us over and over to stay away from anything with the Campbell/Hausfield name on it, said they were all junk!

I haven't seen anything lately, made for home use, that wasn't crap.

The new oil-less models work unless you get them hot from lots of continuous use. I've seen several suffer death-by-die-grinder. I'm also not a fan of the obnoxious noise they make.

The old saying, "they don't make 'em like they used to" seems to apply across the board.

I would suggest looking for something commercial or industrial rated; maybe from someone like Grainger, Northern Hydraulics, McMaster Carr, etc? It's going to cost you an arm and a leg though.

Campbell/Hausfield are garbage, we sell them at work and have about 4 junk ones in the shop right now from the last few months. They are very light use compressors.

We have a semi mentally handicapped person at work that assembles them for us and he always says
"You pay for what you get!"

Now you've got me doing some reading. I've come to the conclusion that this unit from Ingersoll Rand

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/ ... _200375221

sold from Northern Tool ($500, free shipping) is an excellent deal for the quality. They sell them through Airgas as well, although Airgas lists them for around $700.

I suppose I intend to buy exactly one air compressor in my life for my home shop, this unit may be the one if I ever have the money and space for it.

I have been using the Harbor Freight's U.S. General, 60 gallon, 125 PSI (+ or -) vertical air compressor for at least 10 years now. Not bad on the noise and ZERO problems!!! Only mod to it was to add an auto water drain line from, where else, Harbor freight.....
