How can I determine the rear end ratio on my truck? The pumpkin doesn't have a tag on it and I can't find anything stamped or cast into the housing or axles. Thanks!

You are talking about a Luv truck, aren't you? Or are you trying to figure out the ratio of a 64 chevy? Chevy Luv trucks were 4.56 in the 2wd trucks and 4.10 in the 4x4's and 2wd automatic trans trucks. If your trying to figure the ratio for something else, you could try one of the ratio calculators in the information section of this website. If you know your exact speed and exact R.P.M and tire height you can get a ratio# thats really close.

Actually, I am trying to figure the ratio in my 64 Chevy truck. But thanks for the Luv info too. The 64 doesn't run right now so I don't know top speed or rpm's or anything. I'm thinking of putting a 5-speed tranny in it and I was just curious how the gearing was going to be between the trans and rearend.

No, I want to keep the 64. I've had that truck since I was 17, it's been a big pain-in-the-ass at times but I love it. I'd probably trade my wife and kid before I would my truck. I'm slowly developing the same affection for my Luv too.

ok pull the diff cover off and count the number of teeth on the ring gear then count the number on the pinion gear and divide. that will give you the ratio.

luv4me is right about this. It's the most accurate way of finding out the exact ratio. Any other way will just give you a general idea of what you have. It will only cost you a gasket to find out. You'll need to buy gear oil but it would be good maintenance to put fresh lube in the axle. Who knows, you might spot a potential problem like lots of metal shavings. If it's a 64 year axle and you dont know the ratio, that suggest to me that you've never needed to deal with it except adding lube. It's worth going into just to visually inspect things and count the teeth.

pull the diff cover and you will know for sure. Most likely if it originaly came with a 6cyl motor and it has a non- posi, it's a 3.08:1 ratio.

Thanks everyone. I'll pull the cover and check it out. Hopefully all I'll find out is the ratio and that everything is still good.
