Got all the parts in for the timing chain swap, and before I tore everything apart decided to do some more stethoscoping. Spent about an hour last night poking around and found that the water pump was making a LOT of noise. I had previously scoped the front cover, and it was noisy, but it appears the water pump noise was resonating into the cover.

Pulled the water pump this morning and put a new one on. Quiet as a mouse now. I've done a bunch of water pump swaps, but I've never seen one that made as much noise as this one yet had no play in the shaft and did not leak.

At any rate, that's what it was. So, today the LUV got a new water pump, coolant system flush, new valve cover gasket, and an oil change with Mobil 1 full synthetic. And a new fuel filter, too.

The moral of the story: Spend $10 on a mechanic's stethoscope.

Was your previous water pump by any chance a Duralast?

Dunno. My LUV only has 90k, and the previous owner (the only other owner besides myself) said that he couldn't think of anything besides points/plugs/cap/rotor that had ever been changed on the engine. So, it's possible that it was the original pump. It looked like it had been on there a while, but according to the service records the truck has only had about 3000 miles put on it since the mid 90's. Who knows.

Have you had trouble with Duralast stuff?

lol, I went through two of their waterpumps in under a week. The duralast pump has a sheetmetal impeller vs. a cast iron one that the NAPA brand one has (That's the only difference I found). Been almost three years on the NAPA one...

Let's just say that I became an expert (against my will) on the removal and replacement of G180 water pumps...

Huh. I got mine from Advance Auto, and it was an 'Original Equipment Remanufactured' brand. It was around $30 and had no core charge. The impeller in it appeared to be cast.

Next up is a set of tires, a front end alignment, and possibly new shocks. Any suggestions for shocks?
