The thermostat will cause the fan to run only when it needs the cooling. Without one it will run all the time, needed or not.

That first bit about the fan belt, do you know how a hot water 'donkey' works??? The principal behind it???

Thermal displacement. As water heats up it rises, so with no water pump the water in the block will rise as it gets warm and drop as it cools when it hits the radiator. So even with no pump you will get flow/circulation. But its at a greatly reduced flow rate so you need to take care and keep an eye on the temp guage as you can heat the water quicker than it can flow and get rid of the heat.

im changeing my water pump this weekend after reading this and would the heater not work cuz the water isnt pumping right??
