Search the forums. Folks have put just about every engine tranny combination conceivable in these trucks.

BTW, do they really make a V4? Aren't they all inline?

Good luck,
Eric Q.

I've never seen a chevy V4. Hmmm, curious now. I might have to go to Google a few sites.

Their was a Chevy based V4. It was used in VW style buggies. It was small enough to meet the class CC limit. Water cooled. I remember reading about it and how they made the prototype. It used 350 pistons, heads cut in half and welded together, I am not sure about the crank and block any more. I think they used a cast aluminum block. . I think it was a SCAT V4. Same people that make forged V8 crankshafts and VW parts It was also used in open wheel sprint cars. the 4 cylinder class. Every now and then ones comes up for sale, but it is expensive. It is no longer made and information is hard to come by.

Now I can find all kinds of stuff on them... $8500 for a turn key engine...

you want to use an Iron Duke.

I reckon he means the chevy 2.5L S10 5 speed engine.

Great motor, Im building one right now for 400HP+ with a turbo.

Go for it! easy to swap and cheap. But they have a bad history. there are some things about the engine I would suggest you go over before commiting to a definite swap.

so far, I have sunk around 1800 in the short block and I figure another 2300, to finish the motor. but will run regular 87 and make 400Hp in street trim, and a full 550hp on n2o and 25+ boost.

so im guessing around 3500 total. probably more, if I go dry sump like I want to. so lets guess a more accurate 5000.

YEA i know the a sbc would have been cheeper and more powerful, bla bla bla ..... small blocks are like belly buttons to me.... everyone has one.

My main purpose for this engine was the fact that it is the center of alot of hate and disgust. the truth is, the early "metric" (79-86) versions did indeed have alot of issues but most of those were cleared up by 87. But the other thing that had me on this engine was its weight. at half the weight of a small block chevy if I make similar power I should be faster due to a better front to rear weight ratio which aids my traction. And because of the small cubes, I get the extra weight breaks the bigger guys dont get. all in all, I should be just as competitive. So it cost me twice as much....... oh well.... it dont matter to me .... I just like to rub my little 4 banger in the small block boys face. they hate it!

it depends on what you decide you want to do with it, if you keep it stock, then a good rebuild the concentrates on oiling system will guarantee that motor will live damn near forever taken care of.

However..... when pushed the issues start to become obvious. the limit for stock internals I rate at about 175hp.

1. the rods are crap, anything over 150hp and there a liability. chevy inline 6 rods are an excellent upgrade for cheap.

2. the crank is crap on 89 and earlier models. tends to be weak due to the lack of full conterweights. the 90-93 S10 crank is a decent upgrade and have held well in midget race cars. BUT requires oiling mods to make live at all. there are options though, Super Duty parts, or mercruiser parts can solve the counterweight problem if you have the money and machining ability.

3 heads. there OK.... but will not tolerate a single overheat if making any power. the head deck will crack like glass all over.

4 the oiling system. the entire oiling system in the motor is OK for less than 175hp but #1 rod bearing has always been an issue even in a stock engine. There are mods to correct this, but those depend on the desired HP level.

regular 87 . Wow... good luck with that.. Not a slam, really good luck.

Depending on what fuel injection you try to run, get everything off the donor car. Most aftermarket EFI systems are expensive. Megasquirt would be the cheapest way to go if you don't have the ecm and all the wiring.

no not at all...... thats the goal.... weather I can pull it off or not.... gooood question. I have very high hopes for my intercooler and the use of alky injection to suppliment the 87 octane, but its still a far goal, and I have lost alot of motors trying to run on 87... so it could be a far stretch.... realisticly probably end up on the 93.

The only reason I see it being possible is the import 4 bangers. running 87 octane and building over 400HP on boost just blows my mind. So I aim for the same results. There use of Alcohol injection seems to be the key element as well as a close eye on there Exhaust temps, There main advantage is the use of an aluminum head and block... while I can match with an aluminum head, Im still stuck to a cast block.

if they can do it.... so can I!
