A man mistook his fiancée for an intruder and shot her dead the day before their wedding.
Many US households keep firearms in case of an intruder, which can result in tragedy.
John Tabutt told police he seized his gun because he thought he heard someone in his Florida home.
Thinking it was his live-in partner was in bed, the 62-year-old fired at a figure in a dark hallway.
He discovered too late he struck Nancy Dinsmore, also 62, who he was due to marry the very next day.
Tabutt called 911 in the early hours of Friday, moaning and sobbing, according to local newspaper reports.
'I thought I had an intruder in the house,' he told the emergency operator. 'Honest to God, she looks dead.'
A 'distraught' Tabutt stood by while his fiancée was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, according to police.
He has not been charged with any offence and officers said everything pointed to a tragic accident.
The couple planned to wed in a small ceremony at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Florida's Winter Springs, Ms Dinsmore's son-in-law Scott Sposato told the Orlando Sentinel.
'They loved each other,' he said. 'It was quite apparent.
I did not know who it was, so I sicked my pit bull on them and he killed her. Same rules, different weapon.
More to the question is, why he did not know where she was at... Was he coming down from drinking too much... Viagria hangover? Thinking his live-in-partner was in bed.. I just feel next to me and I know.. Reach on my bed and you are not supposed to be there, and you will come up with a dog attached. If you wake up and just start shooting down the hall the man needed to let his spouse keep the gun.
With gun ownership comes responsibility. Nothing in life is free. Freedom is not free. If you have kids in the house you don't shoot 12ga slugs around the house. I don't live in the north where it gets real cold. I do keep a .22 with rat shot in it. OR .357 shot shells in the pistol then regular ammo.
I used to make my own load with the small long round parts of needle bearings in them, along with some shot...
I my house was built in 1893 and you could not blow a hole in it with a 12ga. 100+ year old cypress solid plank walls. No sheet rock.
You can shoot as many politicians as you can if they are in season.
