There is a great spay on rust neutralizer, It's Krud Kutter "must for rust" Works great, just spray on, wash off, dry and paint. If you just leave it on, it will protect from rusting for a long time. Also it's biodegradable.

It converts it to a black anti rust coating. Ospho is a phosphoric acid that does that sort of thing. Also you can use tannic acid based products... These "convert" rust to a phosphorus coating some what like the factories use on metal... Navel Jelly can remove rust... Anything you do needs to be sealed with a epoxy type primer.
SPI's epoxy makes one of the best primers and paints too.

Krud Kutter is phosphoric acid < 20% according to the msds sheets.
Por 15 says it is a rust encapslator.

Oldrob I am sure is correct, and happy with this product..Give it a try....

This one does not change to black oxide. When washed or wiped off, it leaves bare metal look. It does contain phosphroric acid, just like Coke Cola.
I was getting it thru Home Depot, however according to the company that makes it, it's also available from paint suppliers, such as Vista, Shermen Williams, etc. It's used for paint prep. Its not for real heavy rust, just light. It will not cut thru oils etc thou.

Not sure why it leaves a bright shinny metal.... Interesting.
I used a metal prep on trailers before painting. You sprayed it on, let it sit, then we washed it off with the pressure washer.. It was a hazy somewhat rusty looking after that. I think it just said Metal Prep. But that was 25 years ago. We bought it in bulk from Sherwin Williams Industrial, not the Automotive Paint part. I bought stock colors in 55 gal drums. I would think Krud Killer, if it is popular, you should be able to get at paint suppliers, including automotive paint supply.

You have seen it not being painted and not rusting for a long time. Not that I do not believe you.

Wish I could find that test of all sort of products, by a person. It was very interesting.

Sounds like something I'm going to have to try on my '81 Luv. The drivers side of the bed has alot of surface rust. Maybe I'll take pics and document the before and after if anyone is interested.

There is a rust converter at Advance auto parts that I used on my Luv and my '62 Chevy and it works great. Its in a spray bottle and is a bright green color. I don't remember the the name of the stuff, but I'll get it and post it later. You just spray it on and it about 2 hours it coverts the rust to a hard, powdery grey surface that you can paint or apply Herculiner over like I did the bed and floor pans of my Luv.

How long ago did you apply it? My guess is it's held it OK?

Looks like I'm going to have to get me some of that for the areas of mild surface rust on my son's truck.

Thanks for the tip! Image

I used it back in May on the bed of my Luv before I applied the Herculiner. So far no cracks, peeling, rust through ect. The '62 has had sections applied for over two years now with the same results. If I go out today I will stop by Advance and get the name of this stuff.

I'm putting up a new mailbox with a metal base stand and all. It has some chips with rust on it . Think I will get soem and use it and see what it does. Will use appliance paint over it since it is a very hard durable paint or just use some aerasol acrylic enamel or epoxy paint.

I went to Advance auto and got a bottle of stuff called Purle Power deruster. Is all they had and I brushed it on the new mailbox rusted spots. will paint it with epoxy paint in an hour or so. Good experiment huh.

Stopped at an Advance today, but they did not have the stuff I have been using. I ask the guys at the counter and they had no idea what I was talking about (What a surprise  )
I hope they have not stopped carrying it as I have used it for over 2 years and I'm real happy with it. This was not the Advance that I orginally bought it at, so next time out I will try to stop there.
I wish I had the original bottle with the name on it, I knocked it of off the tailgate one day and broke the spray head  so I had to transfer it to a plain spray bottle.
