If you ever get anything with a coolant leak, remove the radiator cap. That will slow it down heaps, no cap = no pressure in the system to push the water out. It will only leak what gravity will take.
I drove my old 1 tonner around like that for a good 6 months.

Bob.

I didnt not know you could do that.. thats cool, thanks.. :D

Learn something new every day.

That first bit about the fan belt, do you know how a hot water 'donkey' works??? The principal behind it???

Thermal displacement. As water heats up it rises, so with no water pump the water in the block will rise as it gets warm and drop as it cools when it hits the radiator. So even with no pump you will get flow/circulation. But its at a greatly reduced flow rate so you need to take care and keep an eye on the temp guage as you can heat the water quicker than it can flow and get rid of the heat.

Cheers, Bob.

I had a flex fan lose a couple blades on my Mom's 77 Chevy van years ago. It grazed the core. I was bringing my newborn son home from Sacramento. No time fro brake downs. I put in Bars Leaks, and got it home. Then I had the radiator fixed and put on a new fan.

bars leaks, silver type stuff in plastic bottle, looks kinda like liquid aluminum, dam thats good stuff.
did a water pump on a full size bronco, dropped the fan into the radiator(of course), said many colorful words when i started it back up when it was finished and the radiator looked like it was peeing(nice steady stream), put 2 bottles of that in, no more leak! thank god!

also had a ford end dump truck, drove it about a mile and had to fill radiator(makes for a long day at work), because of size of radiator we dumped about 8 bottles in, sealed it up tight, worked there 3 months after that and never had a problem with it since, drove that truck every day 14 hrs a day.

cant say enough good stuff about "bars leaks"

Maybe a little late on this one, but I put an electric fan on mine and ditched the mechanical altogether. As far as I can tell, the electric pushes more air. The only downside to going electric that I've found is the extra wiring. Thermostat's about $20-$50, and the fan is about $80 if I remember correctly. Took about 3 hours to install. lol, and an electric fan is one heluva lot easier to find than an OEM one...

BTW, what year? Changing the water pump in an '80 consists of draining the coolant, pulling the radiator (6 bolts), removing all the belts/pulleys (6 bolts), pulling the water pump (4 or 5 bolts) and doing it all in reverse order. lol, I had this down to under an hour... made the mistake of buying the Autozone pump twice. It has a sheetmetal impeller, whereas the NAPA one has a cast iron impeller.

alright, I got the pump installed. Woah, was that a bitch.. The damn bolt on the top, the one which also holds the alternator bracket, just refused to come off.. First the damn bolt stripped, so it was more of a round thing. I tried a smaller socket with a hammer and no luck. I tried welding another bolt to it so that I could then unsrew that and it wouldnt work, i didnt have enough clearance and I kept hitting and burning other stuff.. i ended up just grinding the damn thing off and then used vise grips to get to it from the side, after I slid the water pump out. I managed to get the bolt out with my vise grips, but that was after several tries.
But yeah, now i got to put in that electric fan. It looks pretty cool, and it shouldnt be that hard to install, since it bolts right on to the radiator. After that, i still have to do the damn freeze plug to worry about. (Yeah, they told me that thats what it was called, cus i was just reffering to it as "the plug on the heads" hahahhahahh :D
any one ever change the freeze plug thats waaaaay back there, right between the engine and the firewall?? any tips, suggestions, because I'm thinking of taking the engine off completely just to change the damn thing..

Good luck on changing the water pump...have you read the manual to see all that is required?!! According to the manual you have to remove the timing cover and gear and a bunch of other crap. If you do it let me know how it goes.

I was actually pretty easy, except for that damn bolt which refused to come out.. I only had to move the alternator out off the way a little. If that one bolt would have come out like it was suppose to, I would have finished it in less than an hour. :ebiggrin

Pull it and fix the plug. Do all the plugs and put it back in.

It might take an afternoon or a day but you will know its 100% water tight and you wont have to do it again in a hurry especially if you use brass.

Cheers, Bob.

its worth a shot in my opinion, its like 5 bucks for a bottle here so weigh your options.

spend 5 bucks for a possible fix.

pull the motor and fix for sure.

its your truck its up to you, nut if it was me i would try the easy one first.

I dont agree.

Just get a mate or two and some beers. Pull the motor and put new plugs in it. Get brass ones.
Dont forget the plugs in the rear of the engine and theres 2 small ones in the inlet manifold.

Cheers, Bob.

Yup.. thats the next step. :D
I tried two bottles of bars leak, and didnt work.. :( I guess the crack was too big because I went thru about ten gallons of water and it never stopped pouring out.. Oh well, at least I tried it.
I got the electric fan to work and its freakin awesome!!!! I was testing it straight to the battery, and it blew waaaaaaay more air than the original four blade. I had to eliminate that one aluminum spacer and the second pulley, and I had to use shorter bolts to make the electric fan fit. Now I just gotta wire it correctly.. :ebiggrin

Did you get an electronic thermostat (the little box with a relay on it that has a power wire to the battery, a power on wire to the ignition, a little probe to the radiator, and two wires to power fans)? If you don't, the electric fan will use more power than the mechanical one did. 5hp is a really big deal...
Oh, and I put my electric fan on the front of the radiator. There's one heckuva lot more room up there...

Why do I need this again? how will running the wires without a thermostat will affect it?
