So I Put a Holley adjustable fuel pressure regulator rated for 1-4 psi along with a pressure gauge on my 76 so i can properly tune my 38 DGES Weber. I have been having trouble tuning the thing for some time now. according to the installation guide i am too lean. Screws are tuned out too far. And for no apparent reason my truck acts as if runs out of fuel on the freeway. I thought maybe I just needed to re-jet but knew I had get the fuel pressure right first which is no more than 3.5 according to the installation guide. At this stage I have All new soft fuel line, blown air through each line, to release any build-up through the hard line, new OE fuel pump which is rated 30 gph at 2.5-4.5 psi, and new filter, but still no reading on my gauge.

What am I missing?
could it be a relay?
Not enough voltage to run the pump at its highest output?
What else do I need to check?
HELP!!! :esurprised

OK, so your pumping fuel but not getting any pressure? just trying to understand what your doing... can i see a pic maybe?

just out of suggestion, have you tried not using the regulator? if the pump is only 2.5 to 4.5 then why use a regulator at all? I know webers are sensative, but a 1/2 a pound shouldnt hurt.

So I bypassed the regulator, before connecting to the carb I checked to see how much fuel is actually being pumped out, and to me it seems like enough. the fuel pump is definitely working well. the regulator must not be doing its job regulating or whatever there has never been a reading on the gauge to even give me the ability to adjust pressure. I hooked up the carb and set the idle screw just passed 1 full turn and the mixture screws 2 turns out to get the truck idling decent. The truck backfires/pops as i let of the throttle and let the RPM's naturally drop in every gear. A lot more than with the regulator. Is this normal? to me it seems as its getting too much unburned fuel, but according to the tuning guide I am too lean. not sure where to go from here. Basically this is how the truck ran before i decided to try a regulator. Have you ever used a weber regulator? my guide lists #31800.063 to use with the 38 DGES. maybe I should've bought that one instead.

No, I have a set of aftermarket pulleys from http://www.tweakit.com.au/shop/index.php and there is no timing mark on the crank pulley. I understand how to advance and retard timing with the dist.cap but not sure what direction I should go as far as adjusting. without the marker would you recommend just turning in either direction until it smooths out? also what can I do about finding TDC so I can put a marker on the pulley? what should I use to make that marking?

Thanks!

I have a good feeling thats where alot of your problems are coming from.

I cant remember which direction the dizzy should be turned for timing adjustment ( havent had a stock luv motor in years) but the way its acting sounds like it just doesnt have enough timing. sounds about 8* too retarded.

you might want to try and play with it, but i suggest so only at extreme caution. twist it a small amount at a time and listin for any knock. if theres any doubt, return it to the position it was at and let somebody else try.

oh yea, one thing............. MARK the position of the dizzy first, before you move it.

Got the timing set. turns out I got low compression on all cylinders 1-145, 2-135, 3-100, and 4-130. didnt suspect that considering the engine still runs decent. anyway, time for a re-build.

thanks guys.

Did you check the compression with a hot or cold engine?
