Your problems sound like stock carb issues. My suggestion for you would be to buy a Weber carb. You can find one on ebay for around $300.

The stock carbs work great on a stock motor. There are literally millions of them out there and i can not understand why everybody thinks they are junk.Hell mine works perfect but then i know how to work on them to.

Now when you rebuilt the carb did you get the jets back where they belong and this is not just the main jets it also include the air jets if you pulled them.

Did you do a complete rebuild or just pulled the float cover and spry it out?

I hope you're right, I'm planning to do a rebuild on mine. Any tips?

He's right though, a brand new Weber kit can be had for 300 quid on Ebay. It's up to your patience and budget.

On these carbs as well as other Jap carbs there are air jets that you can see from the top and when people tear down the carb they forget where they belong and go by the main jets.

Small main is the pri.
large main is the sec.
Small air is the sec
large air is the pri

Generally the main problem with these carbs starts with the inlet screen being plugged then tossed the next and more crucial is the main jet wells. These are the two plugs at the bottom of the float bowl most will get debris in them and plug the main jet but most of the time-what happens is the truck will idle ok but will plug as you try to move more fuel (make power). If it gets to plugged then the truck wont idle as this is where the idle fuel comes through.

I had to clean mine tree times (small piece of hose)and have not had a problem for a year now.
