10310 was asking the same question, I told him to just buy a whole third member because that costs the same as a ring and pinion, and used third members are readily available in any of the following ratios;

4.56, 4.10, 3.90, 3.73, 3.42.

That is unless you like setting up differentials; I chose to go the third member route because I didn't want to bother setting up pinion preload, backlash, and tooth patterning. I've done that to a Chevy rear end but never to the third member style rear end. In the Chevy the rear end remains in the car and you use the axle as a test fixture rather than trying to clamp the thing in the vice like you have to for the third member.

I want the lowest possible. Which ones carry the 3.42? I search, but so much comes up I start to get confused...

The lowest one would be the 4.56
Do you want torque Or top speed.

You gotta go with an Isuzu Pup rearend for the 3.42. Pup diesels. I think Pups up to the mid 80s will work...I have an 83 Pup rear in the 3.73 ratio, it fits.

Thanks for the ratio information, I have a 3:42 rear end in my formerly diesel powered 81 Luv but it is not a posi traction, does anyone know if a locker rear end was available in either the Luvs or Pups, and when. The 3:42 works out beautifully with a 700R4 OD transmission back of a slightly warmed up 305, great gas mileage, slow rpms at 65!

there are two ways of telling if a puppy has 3.42 gears
they will say MPG+ on the rear of the cab, behind the doors, at the top of the bed rail hight. letters "about" 1 to 3" high

the other way and its not 100% of the time is they have a 4 speed not a 5 speed, unless it was sold in CA state.
then for some odd reson its a 5 speed

also if a gasser has a 4 speed, i think its a 3.42 as well, but im not 100% on that.
a 3.73 will be much easyer to find sence there most commen
HO yea theres the auto trans puppys there all 4.11s
ive yet to find a 3.90 gear in any pup, mabe its a pre 1981 LUV thing :?:

do you live in a hilly area? or have a drive way that you stop at the top to look for traffic or move lots of cargoLBs :?: if so you will like the 3.73 better.

P.S.
if you find a pup that still has the diesel trans, that trans / bell err frunt half of trans case, is very hard to find.
the starter is on the other side of a gas engine.
thus to change a LUV\PUP to diesel you need a engine and bell housing not just a engine :(
you may find a buyer for it.

if you where close to me i whould give $60 in a hart beat to get one and thats just the bell.

the twins, 81 pup and 81 LUV both are diesel 2.2
