Alright, So I purchased my '79 2wd luv 6 years ago from a mechanic. It ran great for two years and then I became frustrated with the truck not being able to make it up a good hill. I bought a new truck and parked the old one. I have found time recently to work on my parked luv. I replaced the fuel pump and went through and replaced the fuel lines. Changed the cap and rotor and am pretty sure I set the gap right. I have a new condenser on standby if needed. I do not have a dwell meter. Pushed #1 cylinder to tdc and bolted the distributor. New plugs, new wires, new fuel filters, new battery. The poor thing wants to start but just cannot. I am getting fuel up to the carb but it does not seem the jets are spitting anything whatsoever. I am sure this has been asked before but I have spent over one hour looking for common posts and I am losing daylight. Does anyone have any theories for me? I am new to the repair world but follow directions quite well.....Thank you for your time.

You may try to prime the carb by pouring a little gas right down the throat. Don't attempt to do this when cranking and don't stand over the carb when you do crank. If it tries to start or starts for just a few seconds then you aren't getting fuel to the engine and the carb would be a good place to start. If you do this be careful because fuel and fire can come back up through the carb.

BTW welcome to the forum

Be sure the timing marks are lined up when the no. 1 piston is at TDC. Don't have my book handy to tell you where the rotor needs to point to set the timing. Will let you know when Iget to the book unless someone else replies first.

i also just got a 79 luv myself, i had problems with it running way too rich after i replaced the fuel filter twice and the fuel pump once, i then was able to drive it from san andreas to my home in danville, i then took the carb off tore it down ( get an experienced person is my personal suggestion) and used chem tool carb cleaner, berrimens or something like that, you can get it at kragen or auto zone or monument auto parts if you have one around, and also can get a gasket kit without any electronic components but does come with a new needle and seat (from monument auto parts) for like $26 and it gives you pretty detailed instructions on what to do and how to set all the components to work together. also i would suggest getting a HAYNES manual not a CHILTON also my personal feeling about that is chiltons seems to leave you half way through a job and then just stops. i can take a look in my manual if youd like and see what i can find for you if youd like.

P.S. from waht iv heard chem tool is the only carb cleaner i would use according to all my instructors at wyotech anyways =P let me know if theres anything i can do to help
