So my clutch's slave cylinder decided to give out on me this afternoon. The best part is that it did it as soon as I got onto the freeway. I had to drive it back home from work with out using the clutch, boy was that an adventure. Imagine clutchless shifting in somewhat of a stop and go traffic. I had to start it in second and take it from there.. At some points i would be doing about 5 mph in fourth gear

I have a friends abandoned Luv in my backyard and was thinking of "borrowing" the slave cylinder from her truck, but I dont know if it would work. Hers is a 79' and mine is a 73'. I think I read somewhere that in the newer luvs, the slave cylinder is under the driver's side, whereas mine has it under the passenger's side. I tried looking at the interchange parts pdf. but I had to luck in finding if the parts were interchangable. Anyone have any idea?

cool, thanks.. I just looked up ebay and I saw them. If I cant find anything around here, at local shops, ill order tomorrow.. Its pretty cheap too. When my friend's cylinder gave out, off a Bronco II, he had to pay seventy bucks for it. I have another friend who paid one hundred for his, off a Jeep. For the Luv, it looks like thirty, tops! and thats including shipping.. :ebiggrin

thanks again.. :D

Even Napa Auto Parts has them listed online, a little more than eBay it sounds ($43). The master cylinders are cheap too ($25), you might consider picking up a spare if you have the cash. There's info on here about bleeding the clutch, practically we have found you can't use the bleeder screw effectively.

I went to Auto Supply, they always have what im looking for, well at least most of the time. They told me they had to order it, and they wanted about fifty for it. So I went and bought it on ebay. They just sent me a message saying they will ship it tomorrow. They ship from florida so I think I'm looking at early next week? Hopefully it gets here in time for the luv meet.. :D

Ok, so I put on the new slave cylinder this morning and my truck was running awesome. I took it for a test drive for a couple of blocks and everything was great. On my way to work my damn clutch decides to give out again. I thought I had left something loose in the slave cylinder but everything was fine. I'm pretty sure its the master cylinder this time. I had a friend pump the clutch and the slave cylinder seems to move a little. I think the master cylinder is not sending enough pressure, or air is getting in somewhere? I guess ill see what I can do before saturday.. :(

They aren't hard to rebuild yourself if you can get the parts. You just take it all a part, clean, hone the cylinder, clean, and install the new seals and piston. Just a thought, might be cheaper and quicker then waiting on FL.

If you do end up ordering from FL. again, you might be able to overnight or 2 day it for a little extra $.

Thanks for the info. I found it here, but they told me they told me they would have it until tomorrow morning, which is better than getting it shipped from Fl.. :ebiggrin

What was your bleeding process? I learned this from a post on here, I can't find it quickly to give credit where credit is due. Anyhow: To properly bleed the clutch you need to disconnect the hose from the slave. Keep pouring fluid into the master resevoir until it runs out the hose at the bottom. Use this runout to fill the slave. Thread the slave on the hose as the fluid is running out, making sure that the master remains filled. This will properly bleed the clutch, it's damn near impossible to do with the bleeder screw. I have also verified that this technique works.

This is exactly what I did. I followed the steps on the topic: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10019&p=72416&hilit=clutch+help+bleed#p72416
The truck worked great for a while. I just had to push the pedal in about a quarter and it would shift smoothly. I would say I drove it for abot six miles before it went out. Im guessing that if I would have left air in the line, it would have been soft right off the bat, right?

The fact that it worked and then quit makes me also think an air bubble might have caused this.
But you already have the master coming, so why not put it in and be done with it right.?
Or if you have the time and want to save the $, I would try the bleed process again, and drive it around a bit and see if it works.

I'm just gonna drop in the new master cylider. I dont want to bleed it again, and have it work and then be left somewhere, where I have to drive it back home without using the clutch.
