Hello,

I have a 4x4 LUV truck 1979 w/ the 4 speed. I bought a 5 speed 4x4 transmission thinking I could use it, but the transfer case (It came from a trooper I believe) is way too big.

I was wondering, does anyone know if I could unbolt the transfer case from this trans and bolt it to the transfer case of my trans?

It looks like the bolt patterns line up but I do not know about internally.

Thanks!!

I had the exact same question when I posted on here a while ago and I never got a reply. If it's the msg-5 tranny(cable clutch) and not the mua-5 I think it would work but I'm not sure. Right now you're the only one who could possibly find that out. Good luck and let us know.

That's what I thought. I don't even have a cherry picker yet so this is going to take a while. Also, I do no know what tranny I do have now, it has a large transfer case with a lot of large cooling fins. It also has a juice clutch. I am anxious to find out. How cool would it be if it worked!

However, there is the issue of the fact that I cannot drive the truck. It has the non-stock carb on it and emissions stuff has been disabled. I do not think it will pass emissions here in this state. I was thinking of registering it as a OHV only vehicle and using it like that. But still, there's hope I guess for it. I do like the truck. I really don't want to sell it.

If it's a cable clutch than it's an msg-5 and if it's a hydrolic clutch it's an mua-5. I don't think the emissions would be that hard to pass even with the non stock carb. I passed mine in the weber and I had just modified my existing emissions so it would still work. The biggest thing is putting a different cat converter on. You can actually find one for a trooper on ebay for like 60 bucks. Hope everything works for you!

there was a (very small number) of MSG transes with a hyd cluch.
only the CA pup trucks with a EGR on the diesel had it, and there all 4x2.

I just put the MSG 5 in my 80 4X4 and it was well worth the PITA to install .Yes you have to cut out the cross member for it to fit then modify the trooper cross member to use it,you need the trooper front drive shaft (it's longer the the Luv and fits perfect) ,cut the floor board ,and shorten the rear drive line 5.5 in.
