So i got a replacement exhaust manifold for my 73' and turned out to not match my intake manifold. I went back to the bone yard and got the intake manifold from the truck that i had taken the exhaust manifold. This "new" intake manifold has this thingy mangingy that my old manifold didnt have and i dont know what the hell it is, or where to hook it up to.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe it is for leaning out the mixture on acceleration for emissions. I think that if you plug any vacuum ports going to it you should be fine. The large round port on the hex fitting I believe is connected to one side of the smog pump. When in doubt you can leave it unconnected (don't bother to take it off if you don't have to), but make sure to plug any ports so you don't have a vacuum leak. Kragen sells vacuum plugs that slip over anywhere that a hose might have gone. Just don't do anything permanent until you know everything works (like plug holes with epoxy, weld them, smash...). Oh and do you have a factory shop manual (get it from Ebay)? You seem pretty handy so if you got a shop manual you could do really well with your little truck.

Nothing makes you get better at it like experience and proper documentation (shop manual, and all the info on the site's main page. The parts interchange manual and parts listing files are SUPER great for answering these types of questions).

Back to your question, to my knowledge on these motors the only thing that really needs a vacuum connection is the distributor vacuum advance, the hot air door and other accessories on the air cleaner, the brake booster...the usual suspects. Anything else weird is quite possibly emissions related and may have no bearing on whether the truck will run or not. Just be sure to not create any vacuum leaks or your truck will run like crap.

The can is an EGR valve. Thats a large vacuum port fitting, maybe for power brakes.

Bolt in 4.3L Chevy V6 engine adapters are available with 700R4 or TH350.

Agree that the can is an EGR valve. The large port is the exhaust port for the smog pump. If you don't need either just plug both of them off.

Series 3&4 use that intake and that is in fact a EGR valve part # 94210863. It blends exhaust with intake air to help reduce NOX emissions. If you leave it un-hooked (no vacuum) it wont work, it well be fine to run this way but if it is there I would hook it up.

Well if your cali.... dont touch it... leave it and hook it up.... or I think you need to... Im not from cali but I hear the emission police are crazy.

Anyways, for us in NON SMOG controlled areas, Like the others said, it was designed to introduce exhaust gases into the intake tract to
1, it cools the cylinder with inert gases, cooling helps reduce knock.
2, lowers NOX emissions.
3, tends to reburn any unburned fuel or hydrocarbons still present in exhaust gasses.

However, if your adding an inert gas to your air fuel mixture, it takes up space right? This means less air fuel misture is going to be allowed in the cylinder when the valve is operating. I personally dont like the idea, and remove it. It will require a slight carb retune, but you will feel the power difference. it may make your truck smell a little more rich out the exhaust, but its not a problem.

I have removed all of my EGR valves from 99% of my cars. much much happier without them.

well, since its a 73' I dont have to smog it.. Some guy at a carb shop told me to take everything off: the smoke pump, bunch of hoses, and to cap everything. He told me that all that stuff was emissions related, and i didnt really need it. Good idea?? :egeek

If you really want you can just remove the egr valve and plug it. Thats whay i did with my subaru and when i got a Jdm intake for it. It wont affect anything.
