if the pre-76 LUV is anythign like the post then you will lose some low end torque if your exhaust is too big or dosent have enough back pressure, but as for sound or something along those lines, i say go for it, my truck has ( stock exhaust - muffler + motor cycle muffler = LOUD )

actually i worked in a tire and muffler shop for a while and found out if you put a glasspack on backwards it actually acts more like a resonator and quiets it down a little only ever used it in conjunction with a flowmaster before

I had a flowmaster 40 series in my 80 4x4 with a header and weber carb it was alright sounding not like a rice burner but not like a sbc exhaust of course.... but would wake up neighbors I could be heard from a couple blocks away. oh and dont get a big size I had a 2.5 inlet and outlet sitting around and used it. and it does take away some torque. its up to you if you want to do it.

you can also check out electric exhaust cutout kit on ebay it actually opens to full exhaust no mufflers at the flip of a switch you would only need one not duals that would be neat and keep your luv quiet when you want... just a thought I'm probably going to do this with my luv with the sbc in it.

hope this helps

Woah, I havent been here in a while. Just checked the date of when I posted the question.
I went with the Flowmaster and it sounds pretty cool, the guy at the shop told me that i needed a resonator though. why is that?

If you run a full length exhaust system, it should not be that loud. I believe, CA has a 95 DB at 50 feet drive by law still. You would be surprised at the sound DB reduction from the pipe that goes over the rear axle and then out. Also turn the outlet down about 45*, if you point it straight down it will bounce back and make it noisier in the vehicle.
Exhaust have resonate frequency's, that is why a resonator seems to change the percieved sound. They usually don't change the DB level but the sound is not as offensive.
Back pressure is one of the most mis-understood factors. You don't want any. The ideal situation is to have a proportional vacuum created in the cylinders by the exhaust system at all rpms. Too much vacuum will draw too much raw air fuel thru the cylinder.
No matter what you put in for pipe size, where ever you have the smallest x section area will be what is the controlling factor for flow and volume, choke point.

Good reply Old Rob and just to add to it a flowmaster was designed to work with tail pipes to help control sound and it dose make a lot of difference also big pipes don't cause a loss of torque it just moves the torque up to a higher RPM then a smaller pipe.
The flowmaster is a good muffler but a lot of people run to big of muffler and they will not work correctly IE;to big to loud to small a choke as mufflers work on a specific amount of air flow but hey they do sound cool. Then there is the resonating sound coming in the cab from the mufflers to deal with which by the way Glasspacks don't do but the guy behind you pays for it .

Oh and who was the idiot that thinks a quit exhaust robs power any way?
