A couple of weeks ago I rebuilt the original DCH340 carburetor in my '79 2X4. I found to my surprise that there was no power valve. The hole in the float bowl where a PV should be was not threaded and was not drilled so fuel could get to the carb throat. Also, none of the base mounting screws had a vent hole drilled through the long axis. The exploded view and instructions in my factory Series 9 manual clearly showes a PV and drilled screw. I know the carb came from the factory without a PV. I am the third owner and know that no one other than me has ever worked on the carb.

The carb kit exploded view does not show a PV for the DCH340 (Series 9), but does show a PV for all previous LUV carbs.

I reassembled the carb and it works great without a PV. Questions:
1. Is a PV necessary? If so, why didn't the factory put one in my carb?
2. If a PV is not needed, why did the factory put them in other (most?) carbs?
3. Did Hitachi stop using PVs at Series 9?
4. Do any of you guys with Series 9 or newer have Hitachi carbs without a power valve, or is mine the only one ever built that way?

This post is more to get information than advise. I have no desire to replace my carb. It starts quickly, idles smoothly, gets 28 mpg in town, accelerates well and doesn't miss or bog. Since it aint broke, I'm not gonna fix it.

I've torn apart several LUV carbs of different years, and I've seen many with no power valve. (maybe all of them?.?.)
