I have always wanted a Syclone or a Typhoon; but I can't see spending that much on one. I have thought of converting many a vehicle into an awd before...now these thoughts turn towards the LUV. I had plans of lifting the LUV and turning it into a solid axled, off road toy. I have someone right now willing to buy my front toyota axle, so that won't go to waste either (and I get some money back on it). I searched and came up with a couple of people mentioning doing something like this. I'm thinking V8, 700R4, AWD TC (probably form an Olds Bravada or a GMC Safari), custom rear axle (9" or something), custom drive shafts, and whatever else I need. I think that it can be done fairly easily with the right parts. What I am wondering is how much the LUV front end is going to be able to handle? Is the entire front end going to have to be custom too? Just trying to figure out what I want to do before I sell the axle and get in over my head.

First off, AWD and 4WD are 2 different things. I cant figure out the one you want.

What I have is a 4x4 LUV. What I am contemplating doing, is converting it to an AWD LUV. Syclones and Typhoons are, essentially, 4x4 S10's and Jimmy's with an AWD TC. Just my curiosity getting me into trouble again!

AWD is better than 4WD for on road driving.

for off-road driving 4WD with lockers is better than AWD.

we had a 98 dodge grand caravan ES with AWD, for as long as it was "on-road" it was unstopable. went any where, even on ice with studed tires.
was in the rain one time, it started jurking like the AWD was going nuts. the road was coverd in diesel from a leaking truck tank, it saved us from going in the dich. the old ads of subarus saying transfurs the power from the wheels that slip to the ones that grip is very very true :!: :!: it was transfering power from wheel to wheel or frunt to rear. when we where on the diesel and it was going nuts trying to find grip.

under stand though it will not help you stop at all. only if you give it power will it straten a rig up and help keep you on the road.

(edit) oh theres a major computer controling the AWD so that needs to be swaped :(

The significant diference between all wheel drive and 4 wheel drive is that the AWD uses differential power transfer between the front and rear as well as side to side. It's like having 3 posi units. If it goes bad, hope you have a warranty.

The 70 full time 4X4s were the first AWDs later the manufactures went to viscus couplers as well as the internal diff. that the full time setup was in the transfer case.

Is there a major computer used in conjunction with the BorgWarner 4472 TC? I was under the impression that it was a full-time 35% front and 65% rear. I don't know if there is any variable anything :econfused

i think that one is "full time", with a fuid cupling of some kind, giving 1\3, 2\3 drive.

with no computer.

if i had to make a gess id say 2\3 to rear 1\3 to frunt.
