I have a 79 f350 2wd ford truck, with a d60 rear, and 4 speed manual tranny. It doesnt have a bed ( I could buy or build a flat bed htough) but it has a good cab, except for the floors, or an engine. I have an engine (351 modified)that will work if I find a bell housing for it, I've also got brand new fenders laying in my garage. The frame is in excellent shape. This truck was bought new by my grandfather who passed it down to my dad, who gave it to me.
I really need a tow rig, should I take the time to fix this one or should I just go out and buy a cheap tow rig?

i say fix it up, although i would think that the only resons to own a ford are the 300 inline6 and the 390.

my dad has had his '78 ford 4x4 with a 302(or was it a 351w, i cant remember) in it for well over 20 years. apart from breaking a few u joints and tearing up the rear end, it's gave him reasonably reliable service over the years. the thing could use an engine tune up at the least though, or better yet a teardown and rebuild. you can't really find trucks built to the quality of the old fords and chevys(not to mention old toyotas and isuzus) anymore. the truck has a T18 4 speed, NP205 tcase, and a damn bulletproof front axle(wish i could say the same for the 9 inch rear that's blown up 3 or 4 times)

wouldn't be suprised if it's still running 20 years from now

huhb thats suprising that your dads blow up acouple of nine inches. I have a 9" in my 150 whith an inline six putting 380lbs ft of torque to the ground and its fine. The front under that old truck is a Dana 44, those are vary stout axles for a 1/2ton truck.
