With my army of old cars I can't quit thinking about a v8 conversion for the LUV I know half of you reading have already acomplished this task and I'm sure evry one has there own blue print. I was wondering what motor / transmision combintaions will interchange. I know that certain pontiacs have TH400 trannys as well as most cadillacs. I have a good running 400ci pontiac motor hooked to a bad tranny ( i have no idea what # it is) and a 455ci Buick motor in a cadillac with a new TH400 trany. The motor finally quit after a couple of valves did something very wrong. Anyhow can a pontaic motor and a cadillac tranny be put together??? many have told me that a pontiac is a special bolt pattern and won't fit anything but pontiac. Help my confused mind please. I have a freind who would Luv to have my Luv motor.

Pontiac will only fit a couple other makes of car. Can't remember for sure but either olds or buick??? Not sure about Cadilac. Chevy for sure won't bolt right up. But you can always make an adaptor plate to mate anything up.

Buick, Olds, Pontiac. They have what is called the BOP pattern. BOP stands for, you guessed it, Buick, Olds, Pontiac. Should bolt right up...

The Olds held up longer for me than the others mostly, but I like to turn mine up to at least 4 grand...

Cadillac had thier own bell pattern. However the internals will interchange. I've swap internals for quite a few thru the years.

The Pontiac is longer, wider, taller, and heavier than the SB chevy. I raced them back in the 60's with the last one being Ram Air V. Yes Ram Air V. That was a mean setup. They didn't make many in cars. Factory claimed 400 hp from 400 ci. Every one we had on dyno hit of 500 hp with tuning. Unfortuanetly since they didn't make many and put even less in cars, Trans Am Firebird is the only two I ever saw, they were'nt legal in most ruling body's.
It will be a lot more work to put the pancho in and there are no readily avail parts to do the swap. You could sell the good engine and trans and buy a SB chevy or 4.3 V6 although you may end up with the known saying, "I could of had a V8" and 700R4 tranny.

Should have put that in there. His caddy is Buick powered, so I was showing him the tranny would work on the Poncho...

There was also a TH350 that would bolt to the BOP and Chevy. I don't recall if or what other cases were cast that way.
It threw everybody for a loop when some olds owners sued GM because they had chevy engine instead of Olds engines. That when GM went to the global statement that all engines were GM produced by thier differing divisions. Also shortly after the gas crunch hit in 74 they needed a V6 quick, brought the buick odd fire back for all mid size divisions cars.

I have the duel bolt pattern TH 350 (corporate trans) but to keep it simple chevy is the bastard of GM in the bell housing department meaning all other trans will interchange and the corporate pattern as well.

Now just about any motor trans combo will fit it is just a matter of personal choice meaning you don't have to build a belly button car (everybody has one)but one that suits you.
Nuff said.

I have an buick 455 in the cadillac that came out of a riviera. and its bolted to a cadillac th400 tranny. the pontiac however won't do anything for me. after more measuring i think I've decided to keep the old 4 banger in tact for originality reasons and reality reasons. Got some recent pics on another thread but won't be on there till lunch time. thanks for the know how guys!

Just to be different look at the Old's Quad 4 with a T-5. The last year of that motor was 200 HP stock and 400 plus is easy with turbo or supercharging
