Just for information, the gasoline powered 81-82 Luvs had their gas fillers on the drivers side, BUT the diesel powered ones had the fuel tube on the passenger side.
Also putting a sbc V8 in a 81-82 is a lot easier than earlier models, especially when making the motor mounts at home.

I have a 1.8L gas powered stock 81 Luv and it has the gas tank and filler cap on the passengers side. My '79 4X4 is on the Drivers side. I'm looking for a local stepside bed as well. I found one from a 50's chevy a while back on Craigslist but before I could reach the guy the add was pulled. Damnitt.

Thank you for that information, I was obviously giving out the wrong info, I had just noticed that all of the diesel powered Luvs in our fleet (9) the fuel filler was on the right, while the gas powered ones the fuel filler was on the left, (8) so I just assumed that was the pattern used on all of them.
My apoligies to anyone that I may have mislead.

Thx again and if I hear of any stepsides I will keep you in mind. I am still looking for new fenders for my 78 stepside, so far no luck.

I've only seen one in person, and I've been looking for years. mytmouz has the one I saw. Here in the southeast, they are very rare.

No problem, I've done the same thing before and someone corrected me. It happens. Did you say you have 9 Diesel Luvs and 8 Gas? That's a bunch of Luv's.

I should have explained that remark, we did have a whole herd of Luvs in our plumbing business, but that was several years ago, now we only have two, a 78 and a formerly diesel powered 81 Luv, now both sbc powered.
Sure wish I would have hung onto some of them now! Most were literally stripped and junked out, usually because they were all rusted through and through. The 81-82s had a very thin frame, one that was very prone to rust completely through!
I think this is one reason we don't see many 81-82 survivors.
One strange thing happened to my 78, it sat in a field for several years and during this time the wheels warped! Strangest thing I have ever had happen to a truck!
Anyway good luck finding a stepside, a couple of Luvtruck.com members have expressed interest in re-making them, I think it would be a great idea!
Since the actual bed was/is just a rectangular steel box and the fenders were all fiberglass, it would seem like a fairly easy project. I am sure that just making the fenders again would prove to be financially rewarding because there appears to be enough interest in them. I checked with LMC truck parts and they have replacement steel fenders for early Fords and Chevys. (for almost all years.) But while the cost isn't unreasonable at $250-$350 each, the additional $125 shipping fee per fender makes them quite expensive!
see ya,

There were 3 major manufacturers of the step side bed. California Step Side was one here on the west coast, they splashed chevy truck step side fenders in fiberglass and had steel step plated in the front of the fenders. Nothing on the rear. Anderson ????? in the south also made a step side package, beds were actually made in Anaheim, Ca. They splashed the late 50's, 60's fenders. I don't know who made the bed and fenders with the molded in step front and rear for GM. All beds were installed by new car prep division. I remember seeing the beds stacked up and the trucks without beds waiting to be fitted. What amazed me is how painted in two different places the paint always matched.
I vaguely remember something about the tail gate hinge and chain / latch being different between the two. I have a picture of a 76 with the Cal step side that shows the difference in the fenders. If it is not posted on www.photobucket.com/v8luv, I can post it. The picture on cts post is a factory stepside.

I almost bought a Luv, I don't remember the year, but it was a 4x4 conversion with a straight axle and a Tool box bed. It must have been before the factory 4x4.. Not a stepside but I should have bought it. The bosses youngest son had a stepside, I think they called it a California stepside. It was a automatic... Yellow with graphics. I should have bought it, when it was not good enough, and gas prices went down again.. late 70's
